Sounds like the reg rec is faulty, shouldn't really need a new stator. Have you checked the ac voltage to the regulator?

Try some ACF50 it deactivates and stops corrosion.

No idea about clearance but if it does fit you would be better off with a 4C8 shock, by far a better shock.
