Welcome in Mike
I take it you have a 5pw (first of the so called injections ) ? Nice bike :handgestures-thumbupright:
If you do have a worn second gear then don't worry as there's a few of the guys that have sorted it and I know MarkYPVS did a write up on it in his project "triggers broom" in the project section .
Give us a bit about your biking history and some pics of the bikes up so we can get to know you

History is maily GSXR if im allowed to put that on here lol apart from an XJ seca my dad left for me. My last was was an L4 1000 volcom rep but i must be honest and say the r1 has a lot less vibration i was shocked. The r1 seems to change fine until I have it singing then it wont short shift for some reason and has got jammed when changing down if, I need to return to the dealership please shout because it has a 3 month warranty. Apart from this i have been converted and prefer it to the GSXR.

If you got it from a dealers then take it back , it could be as simple as the selector shaft spring or it could be engine out an new 2nd and 6th gears .
I think Mark spent £350 on new parts doing his but it's been a while since I looked into it .
When you take it back tell them you have a bit of experience with early R1's and 2nd gear is a common problem , don't tell them you read it on a forum because they'll fob you off .

I still have the selectors etc , i just changed 2nd and 6th, im happy to sell you the spring/ selector etc and a very good price as they are no good to me( new gen yam in packets), its not a gearbox engine out job ;) ;)

Welcome to the forum Mike.

That doesn't sound like the 2nd gear problem, which is when it doesn't engage 2nd properly. Might pay to get it back to the dealer.

Welcome in Mike and hope you get that one sorted. As the guys say i quick visit back would be my call, so long as its not a day away.
Mind you mine was other end of the country and it had to go back for a look.

Mate my 4xv had around 75,000 on it when it blew , I know the previous owner had a problem and had the head sorted at around 50,000 .
Hopefully the dealers I'll sort it for you and you'll love the bike

It sounds like the selector to me, which should be an easy fix.

The 2nd gear problem seems to be more to do with how the bike has been treated than mileage. There's a few of us here with much higher mileages than yours.

Welcome
Just make sure the gear lever is pivoting freely on the footpeg, give it a few drops of oil and see if it improves.
Otherwise it could be the shift spring which is fairly easy to do on these.

Welcome to the forum mike, I hope you get the issues you have sorted. The 5pw is an amazing blooming bike, I have always wanted one, but sadly never had the opportunity. Love the rear light on them.
Regarding mileage I’ve had two R1’s that have for over 65k and 45k miles without any major issues... if looked after they just go on and on... they give the Duracell bunny a run for his money

Enjoy your R1, oh and regarding GSXR, we love all bikes on here ... even hondas.... well maybe not lol. I’ve always fancied a GSXR 750, a mate has one and I’ve ridden it a few times and it was amazing

Anyway welcome to the forum

Stephen

Lol. Ive got to be honest wouldnt change my 5pw and Barbados. I dont do enough miles to justify mega bucks on a bike.

With you on that one , I'll stick with the half-one but I bet it would swap me for a rider that could do it justice
