Re: Just joined
Welcome in Andy
Enjoy the 4xv and the forum .
There are a number of posts on here about the gearbox issues , unfortunatly its an engine out job and split the cases but the gearbox comes out in one as a cassette and the rest stays in place aparentely . As far as i know all the parts are still available and i'm sure the later 5pw gears fit . You will have to change second and 6th .

Welcome, good to have another 4xv owner on board.

Hi Andy and welcome. I've got a '99 4XV and I dreaded gearbox issues but I think later 4XV's even before 5JJ's may have received a mod. Mine's done 40k and no issues at all .........he said touching wood.

Re: Just joined
There may have been a change to the later 4xv's, but most of the people here with 2nd gear problems had the 5jj.Rednine wrote:Hi Andy and welcome. If you buy replacement gears, one of them has a 5pw prefix, and not many 5pw's seem to have the problem.
My 4xv has done 70,000 miles and is OK, although changes up or down into 2nd are clunky. The box does feel better than when I bought the bike following a steady diet of good quality synthetic oil.

Re: Just joined
I agree Moise, there is no substitute for buying the best possible oils you can afford. I also change mine every 2,500 - 3,000 miles.

Re: Just joined
I’ve still got my old gears somewhere the dogs had started to round off. But I’d used it for more than 35 trackdays before it went and I never use the clutch to change up the box. It was one of the earliest 99 4xv’s. If I remember correctly the problem with mine was simpler than gears but as the engine was out we swapped 2nd and 6th out as the ware on the dogs was there And put in a nova racing 1st gear much longer ratio makes it more like a close ratio box. I seem to remember the workshop owner saying he had fixed a good few track/race bikes with the same problem but they tend to get more abuse and heavy high rev downshifts than a road bike.Moise wrote: ↑Sun Dec 30, 2018 2:47 pmThere may have been a change to the later 4xv's, but most of the people here with 2nd gear problems had the 5jj.Rednine wrote:Hi Andy and welcome. Re: Just joined
The bike is def red and white, when clean.
50000 on the clock
Was garaged for 3 years and not used by my brother ugh it needed to be brought out for some fun
Never had a Yamaha before and only ever ridden a mates tenere
It’s a great bike for its age Shows it’s been ridden but it’s nearly 20 years old a
It’s ageing better than my beloved Kawasaki’s
Once it is warmed up and in 3rd it rune really well
First and second is smooth unless u r giving it lots of revs and is worse when cold
So when i sort gear box and then get a mate to respray it should I keep it aaa the original paint job - seems silly to do anything else
As it’s all original apart from the levers seems wrong to add too many extras and change the exhaust

you could always buy chinese fairings for around £400 if you fancy a change of colour and keep the originals in the loft for later , we love fairings

Re: Just joined
Just to clarify the red dig above.
Some of the old farts on here think the “old man blue” r1’s are as fast as our faster red or white r1’s. But the red and the white bike riders know ours are so much faster but it’s a secret so keep it under your hat newbie.
