Dukes Pass

Post by LOCKE »

Went over the Pass today, cracking weather and the road was quiet. That's a road to keep you focused.

Sounds like you had a great time Colin, how about a bit more info for us southern boys n girls like what the road is like, where it runs to and from so we can look it up on a map and be green with envy..... at first I thought the duke of Edinburgh had passed his test

Glad you enjoyed yourself, and you had the sound of the ackras as well....... Awesome :D

As stug says it starts at Aberfoyle and slowly climbs, the road is tight and technical to start off with and is mostly 1st and 2nd gear hairpins. You are riding through the Queen Elizabeth Forrest and the scenery is fantastic with views of several Bens. The road then gets more fluent on the way down to Loch Achray then finishes with some fast straights towards Callander. Good points are the scenery, keeps you focused and alert. Bad points are some bits are very tight and narrow and in the height of summer there are a few coach tours on the road which either hold you up or meet you on the wrong side of the road on a blind bend! I prefer to do the Pass at the start and end of the summer when its quieter.

I gotta be honest, the Dukes Pass is my least favourite road.... for the exact reasons that someone else mentioned. Buses on the wrong side of the road, every-time I've been on it the road surface has been horrendous and its far too slow (stop & start).
I got a dig bick. You this read wrong. You read that wrong too.

Not been on it for a few years, now -but I always remember it as having some trecherous gravel if you were forced off line............

As said - cracking scenery!

Pussies.......
It's a testing ground boys and you just failed

Had PJC and Hedgepig over the Dukes last year.

We do it regularly, usually about 6:30 7pm ish when the traffic has calmed down. 600cc and the pass becomes a hoot. Use all the road/both lanes and the pass comes alive. It's a good testing ground for hard breaking and turning in. When you know the road it becomes a lot more fun.

I remember that road, its a great place to use all your riding skills especially the" keep your eyes open" and "see what's around you". That run into Calander 20pence, 50pence etc. Quite technical with a hangover an aw

I love the pass, but as other have said, watch out for gravel and tour buses, oh and the obvious car driving mongs!

I have a video of it from one of those little key fob cameras, sh!t quality though. I'll be back home in a couple of months and will take a new video, if anyone's interested, I'll post it up here.

A Visio of the pass would be great fir us southern Jessie's who never get north of the boarder to see what we are missing.

. I know what you mean scrappy re going riding later in the day, I prefer riding the cat and fiddle first thing in the morning, get up there about 7am .... It's perfect on a summers morning, makes a diversion on the commute to work

Dukes Pass

Post by HenryHax »

Rode the Dukes Pass A821 from Arrochar yesterday, dont know if any of you are planning to use this road in the near future but I would advise against it, its very very poor, road surface is shocking, full of potholes everywhere
Just a heads up....

Pot holes, gravel and the odd tour bus on the wrong side of the road just part and parcel of the Pass.
