I'm really not sure what you're getting here? I live in France and the peage system is set up with three different options, lanes where you stop and pay a person in a booth, lanes where you pay using your credit card, or the telepeage lane, where you go straight through without stopping, the barriers raise automatically, and the card reader registers your details and direct debits your bank account.

If you have to stop and have to show them the card, which I assume you've paid something for, you might just as well not have bothered and used the pay booth lanes?

When I looked into getting these cards for my own bike use, it seemed that the readers can't differentiate between bikes and cars, so you may end up paying the tariff for a car instead of a bike, plus, if you go through the credit card lane you may have exactly the same problem, that's why bikers always use the lane with the pay booth with a person in attendence who debits the correct fee!

4.4. I’ve got a motorcycle?

You can use a Liber-t tag with a motorcycle with some limitations, the main one being that to avoid being charged as Class 1 vehicle you must use the manual lane and hand over the tag to the person in the toll booth. They will use a barcode scanner to read the tag and will charge you as a Class 5 vehicle. The main advantage is that it saves you fumbling for cash / payment cards with gloves on but you should not use the automated lanes.

This could prove very useful. I've been to Europe and used the Peage for the last 2 years running but we always went through using credit card machines, I had no idea we could've paid less using a booth! Oops.

Is it right that it costs 40€ up front? Surely that negates any savings etc?

Your right it does have a set up cost, but that's the same for car, bike etc & it can be used for either . also ican give my tag to anyone going into france and then just get the cash of them when they get back.

Seriously, I'm trying to. If you're a car driver then you go through without having to queue/stop and it pays automatically. You can do that with a bike but you'll have to pay the same as a car.

With the card you got, you had to pay for it which surely negates any saving and in order to get the motorcycle discount you have to stop anyway......so you may as well just pay at the booth.

So seriously, what's the point?

The reason I got it was the fact now any cash I was planning to take for the toll roads will be paid via the tag ,( I'm spreading the cost of the trip tolls on the tag fuel on CC's) so that's less cash to be carried around , also depending on where the tag is it'll be easier then having to keep taking cash out at every toll booth.
