Hello From north Wales

Post by jezzlambert85 »

Hi My name is Jezz and i wanted to say hello and introduce myself and my new bike which is a 2007 black R6 with 11400miles.

I had the bike delivered today and was hoping you guys could help me out on a issue ive picked up on while inspecting.

I made the mistake of not viewing the bike and it was a private sale......

Okay 1st thing is the ignition barrel, its a b1tch to engage or disengage the steering lock and as for turning the ignition on its has to be so precise takes alot moving up and down and twisting the key left to right.

Ive sprayed the barrel with wd40 but no difference. Is it need of a new barrel?

Anyway heres some pics

Welcome dude.

Does the barrel look damaged at all? Do you have all genuine yamaha keys and the master key?

Maybe you are just unlucky dude!? And the barrel is just dodgey.

Have you contacted the seller? Was he aware? Maybe worth giving your local Yamaha dealer a ring to see about a new lock set and keys?

Welcome in mate. My GSXR used to have a bit of a sticky barrel. I just packed it with grease and it sorted itself.

Maybe grease is a better option that wd40 il try that and if not replace the barrel. Thank you. Another great forum by the sounds of it! I look forward to being a part of it!

Hey bud, my 4c8 barrel went sticky for a bit, like you i would struggle to get the steering lock on. I wasn't too fussed as only track bike but i kept filling with wd and its fine now. Gotta be worth the try first..

Welcome to the forum Jezz and congratulations on getting your new toy. Gutted about the ignition barrel, in the past mine have stuck but as Percy Vere suggests.... Keep trying mate, personally I used grease like Locke and after some careful and gentle wriggling with the key it did free itself. Also from memory try spraying upwards underneath the ignition barrel, I think there is a but of it that moves to click in place for the steering lock and it's that bit that can get stiff.

Good luck and welcome

Stephen :D

Good news guys the barrel is now fully repaired!! Took the advice and stuffed the barrel with some high pressure grease (bit overkill but it was free from work haha) lots of twisting it into ignition but it just got easier and easier everytime i engaged it and steering lock is now lovely and smooth! Happy days.

Also installed a new cree led sidelight (very bright) and 55w hid kit to give it cleaner look along with the removal of the pillion pegs to sharpen up the back end. Will post some pics later...

Thanks
Jezz

Nice one Jezz, glad you have sorted out the ignition barrel

HID lights certainly improve not only the look but visibility of the bike, I had them fitted to my R6 and R1, they made a hell of a difference in the dark too :D

Bikes look better without the pillion pegs when they have a rear cowl fitted like yours. My mate had the 06 R6 and I'm sure that came with blanking plates to cover the hole where the pillion pegs fitted, I know my 09 didnt which was always a bug bear of mine.
