Newbie R1/7 build and also which R1 to own?
Hi there! I've been given an amazing opportunity to buy a R1/7 kit from a good friend of mine with a few parts more to source but this is long term and will keep me happy for a while. Information is very limited as spondon and Chesterfield CMC didn't make many and are often confused with Harris and QB carbon R71.
I'm also looking to own a R1 but really don't know which model.. 4xv or 5jj? 2005 onwards? I really don't know but I must say that the older models seem more appealing but some are asking for stupid money just because they have the original reflector?
Hopefully I'll get to know you all over the times ahead. My YouTube is Doctorpowerful (John Caci)
I've just rebuilt a kawasaki zx6r J1 and I have a couple of videos of a few mods to my 2006 Warrior xv1700 midnight.
All advice appreciated

Welcome in John
Which R1 , now theres a loaded question
98 4xv to be original but way too over priced , 99 should be slightly cheaper
5jj again cheaper than 98 and better midrange
5pw first of the injections , seems to ride like the 5jj and the injection is good
5vy first of the underseat exhausts , last of the 20 valves , don't really hear a bad thing about them , infact they get a lot of praise
4c8 16 valve and first fly by wire , choppy laggy throttle until you get them remapped and then they're just fucking mental top end , still meant to have a nice midrange . . . . . . a remap will transform a 4c8
14b The sauage , a real marmite bike , you either love them or hate them and they take a different riding style .2009 models were inconsistant with the engines , some where good some lacked power . Again snatchy on the throttle and benifits from a remap . the 14b is more torque than screamer , in 2014 they introduced the 14be with a facelift and more electrinics .
2cr ment to be more like a 600 with a ltr engine crammed in
Just things that i've read mainly on here and people will add they're opinions , i've only ever ridden the 4xv so i'm no expert on R1's

Does this mean you have one of the original 4xv frames that spondon changed the headstock angle on to be nearer the r7 geometry?Doctorpowerful wrote: ↑Wed Apr 29, 2020 9:07 am Hi there! Thanks for the info! No one has ever broke it down like that. The Americans on YouTube seem to talk about themselves more instead of the bike so thanks!
Yes it is and "it's the best one they have done." Lots of bracing and an original R7 swing arm too.

Brilliant I’ve seen so many people build an r7/1 not understanding that the frame and modified swing arm are what made these the original r7/1 not the bullshit lookalike.Doctorpowerful wrote: ↑Wed Apr 29, 2020 10:27 am Thanks for the info! Re: Newbie R1/7 build and also which R1 to own?
I’ve got a heavily modified 4xv In the shed that was my track bike for years and a 4c8 that is my current road and track bike. If your doing the 7/1 I’d say as the other bike a 5vy or 4c8 because they are very sensibility priced and a big step up in handling/power over the earlier models.Doctorpowerful wrote: ↑Wed Apr 29, 2020 10:27 am Thanks for the info! My 4xv had reduced off set yokes, Penske shock, longer chain to mimic the longer swinger I couldn’t afford at the time( but I’ve got a spondon quick release now), Hindle full system, brembo master, sigma slipper clutch And lots more. My point is that it was a brilliantly balanced bike BUT no better than a standard 5vy or 4c8. So if you want your “other” R1 to be as well mannered as an r7/1 go 5vy or 4c8.

Welcome tiger forum John, nice introduction
I’ve owned all R1’s from the 5vy to the R1M, I’m not a technical guy, but I can tell you what they are like to ride.
This is a really great biking community and people are here to help each other, whether it’s.. don’t do it this way... cos I fooked it up... or this is how you do it...
We all share a passion for bikes
Any questions.. just ask, someone will have the answer..
Oh and jompy .. he is a good egg... and to be fair, his reply to you really was the best post he has ever made... winders cease to amaze me.... obviously lock down has been beneficial to him.. nice one jompy
So welcome to the madhouse, join in the banter and laugh along with us all
Welcome..

Thanks for the info! I'll check them out, I'm a red and white guy.. Saying that.. Has anyone had red/white '98 colours done on theirs? Just an idea but don't know if will look daft haha.
Tell me more about Spondon, do they specialise in a service or do they have frames etc for sale already?

Spondon closed down a few years back , they were about 5 mins walk mfrom my house , one of the owners shafted the other then if i remember correctly he took most the tooling over to norton in donington and fucked that up tooDoctorpowerful wrote: ↑Wed Apr 29, 2020 1:39 pm Thanks for the info! Hello again! I decided to go for a 4c8. Only 9700 miles but a few things to do like consumables etc. I've only had it for a day and found that it wasn't easy to start. I'll have to investigate. Looking forward to using the forum!

Sweet , you wont be dissapointed , one of the guys was saying 4c8s like to be ridden hard to get the best out of them , do you know if it's been remapped or not ? If its still standard or has a power commander get it remapped instead , ask Danf1 about his experianceDoctorpowerful wrote: ↑Sat Jun 27, 2020 11:45 am

Yes I'll definitely look into it, I think I'll take some panels off and see what's what. Engine management light is saying exup. Great thanks I'll ask him. I'm sure I've seen the manual on here to download so I'll do that too.

Hi mate, the 4C8 looks nice The battery in those don’t like sitting around so chances are that’ll be the starting issue. There’s loads of info on sticky EXUP valves but it’s a relatively easy fixDoctorpowerful wrote:Yes I'll definitely look into it, I think I'll take some panels off and see what's what.
