Northants Newbie
Hi Guys,
Just a quick post to say hello as I'm new here.
I picked up a 1999 R1 on Friday that had been slid down the road as a repair / restoration project. No history ( ) but I bought it as a long term project for complete strip down and re-build. I think the main challenge might be finding parts - especially bodywork, but I'm hoping I can pick up some tips and information on here. The bodywork is blue with Gauloises logos, which tbh I'm not a fan of, but I love the blue, so hopefully it should be a good project.
The main goal is to get it to pretty much as standard / new condition with the possible addition of an aftermarket can and steering damper, but as I haven't had a bike for years I certainly don't want any more power!! Thinking I might do a refresher course when the bike is finished so I don't bin it again!!
Anyway, sorry for the long first post - speak soon!
Stewart

Welcome in Stewart
We like long posts & posts with pictures , you might want to start a post in the projects section & give us updates of your progress .
Have you thought about Chinese fairings as apparently there's some good cheep companies out there , I think there's a post in the Reviews about them .
Send 2002r1jon or bub a pm & see if they can change your name for you .

Hi Jompy,
Many thanks for the reply. I thought about the Chinese fairings, but was really concerned about the fit and the quality so I will look for the review.
Pictures of the bike in its current state are now in the projects section
Thanks again,
Stewart

Re: Northants Newbie
Cheers mate,
I was thinking OEM where possible, but having read the review for the ABS pattern stuff I might go for that in the short-term, then try to source as much original stuff as I can when I can afford it. I think one of the first bits I'm going to look for when I've got the cash (car issues have come along now ) will be a replacement head light - I imagine they are getting rarer and rarer? I have no idea what Yam would want for them but I'm guessing it would be the thick end of £300 if they're still available...

Re: Northants Newbie
Welcome in Stuart, good luck with the project, will take a peek at the pics in a mo. This really is a great site, peeps are friendly and helpful, loads if banter and quite a bit of very good humoured p!ss taking. We are all from different walks of like, but the thing we have in common is our love of bikes and in particular Yamaha, whether they are r1's, r6's r125's or whatever.
We know one and other on here though the majority have only met a hand full of members, there are no clicks also which makes this cool.
What I'm really amazed at is mr arf an R1 aka Jompy is giving advice on fairings..... He would not let any such item anywhere his naked R1 ... Only pulling your plonker jompy
BTW nice introduction Stuart
Oh and spellin things wrong like money instead of monkey will make you fit right in here... Just don't go fir them cheep fairings ( jon2002r1.... Did that on purpose... Should be cheap

TBH the chinky fairings are fairly good now,and some do any paint design you want,way cheaper than OE fairings anyway,head lights can be also bought from China too,unsurte of the quality of the lenses though,or £674 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/YAMAHA-HEADLI ... 43c9a02ae8" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Re: Northants Newbie
My excuse is predictive text.... Also I'm a dyslexic accountant.... The forum loved it when I told them we had £1.5 million spare and than had to correct myself and tell me it was actually £5.1 million..... They may not have been as happy if I had got it the other way round...jompy wrote:ha ha ha my fingers are just fat & i can't spell for toffee2002r1jon wrote:Absolutely correct Mr Coates, unfortunately i have dyslexic fingersjompy wrote:don't you mean "unsure" ?2002r1jon wrote:Welcome in Stewart ill have a look at your user name in a bit mate, can you PM me your email or mobile number so i can contact you when its sorted so your not trying to log in with the wrong user name
