New R1 owner from NZ

Post by Moise »

Just bought a 1999 R1 so thought I should join a R1 forum which is in English. I've been riding for over 40 years and also own a Kawi ZZR1200. The R1 will be my first ever Yamaha!

The bike isn't quite roadworthy so I'm having it transported, should have it on Friday. It's done 28,000 miles, although the vehicle report I've just received shows that the odometer went backwards for a year. Weird.

Will post a photo of the bike once I figure out how.

Welcome in Duncan
You'll love the 4xv , a few things to look out for like Exup sticking , clutch spring weakening & the white 21 pin connector on the wiring loom ! Get yourself over to the 4xv section , download the service manual & parts microfiche the have a bloody good read up !
Ohhh & heads up on the sump nut , it's not 42nm as stated in the book it's at least half that unless you want a cracked sump .
Enjoy :)

It's in really nice condition for a 15-year old bike, looks like it hasn't been ridden in the wet very often. There's a mark on the fairing from when the previous owner dropped it when he stopped to fill with petrol, and some scratches on the engine cover on the left when he dropped it on the other side after picking it up! Funny how that happens... Fortunately it has crash protectors.

Not if they are organised in NZ Gary ......

Welcome to the forum Duncan, you have a beautiful looking R1 there, as Jompy has said, loads of peeps to give you advice and tips, enjoy your first Yamaha, it will be the start if a love affair.

Good bunch of chaps and chapesses on here, loads if banter and English humour.... Even from our friends in Scotland... But I suppose that's Scottish humour  , In fact quite a few nations are represented here, most of the Europeans speak better English than us lot

Anyway welcome :P

"Not if they are organised in NZ gary"
(Nowt worse than having to explain a gag) tongue in my cheek steve !!!
I feel a bit silly now steve. I meant rideouts or track days over here.
Having been to Australia with a 4 hour stopover in Kuala Lumpar, it was 28 hours door to door for £900. Assuming NZ is similar he'd have to ship the bike over first as the cheapest way is by boat which is 6 weeks and about £400.
Now I don't care how keen he is, I don't think anyone would do all that to spend a Sunday afternoon at 50mph frequenting the Cat and Fiddle haha
Over to you Moise..............

Might pass on that... Yeah, it is a long flight, I've done it quite a few times now. My parents emigrated when I was 4 so all my relatives are in the UK.

Definitely planning to get it on the track, will probably start with CSS.

Not as noisy as you'd expect. It has a plate over the end and the gases exit through a series of circular slits at the end of the pipe.

Never seen anything like it before.

I'll post a photo when I get the bike.

Welcome in mate. Your bike looks mint. Loads of good banter and knowledge on here. You have to read Steves posts 2 or 3 times before you understand. He does speak English, I think. ;)

Can't believe I'm doing this................
Steve. Duncan, from NZ has joined a UK Yamaha forum where lots of people amongst other things arrange track days and ride outs at various locations around the country. Living in NZ makes him a long way away. Possibly too far away to add his name to say a track day at Cadwell or a rideout along the south coast one sunny Sunday morning. Hence my phrase "ruled yourself out".
I have asked my 16 month old daughter if I can simplify it further and she assures me it's ok. Capiche ??????????????

OK, so this is like ZZRBikes.com, which has great info on the ZZR1200 and lots of banter. But hopefully without the political rants! Acronyms and US English were a challenge at times.

I see you also have Mr Green

I also checked out R1-bikes.com, but when I saw that they had an oil forum, realised it wasn't the place for me.

The exhaust is an "Extreme Blaster XB08". Here's a link if you're curious: http://gsxrexhaust.com/index.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
