I know I'm new here but I thought it would be a nice thread to have on here, give us something to think about during these dull and depressing days.

What is your favourite road/route?

I have one in particular that i like to do at least once a year.

Basically your heading to fort william then onto spean bridge via the A86 all the way to Aviemore, the A86 is an incredible road and is probably the best riding road i've been on yet, very quiet and the road surface is fantastic. Some nice stopping points on the way like at the Loch Laggan Dam, a nice little beauty spot that looks like something out of a fairy tale and the Cairngorm Hotel for some grub before the run home down the A9 or back the way you came.
Approx 300miles

Another part of the route that you can add onto it is going up to Inverness then heading home down the other side Loch Ness on the A82, that road can get busy at times however.

One of my favourites blasts on my R1 is the A1066 Diss to Thetford in Norfolk 17miles, very fast with some tricky corners and only 2 short 40 limits, very light traffic to, get a clear run get it right you will be buzzin

For me it's the roads round Buxton, ....

A50 Warrington,A537 knutsford, Macclesfield to Buxton, famous cat n fiddle, you then can go left A5006 or right over Harper hill and take the A515 to Ashbourne a517 belper or A6 to bakewell (always good for some tart) and either way end up at Matlock bath, loads of bikes and great places to eat.

Other rout , Clitheroe to Ginsburg A59, left to Settle A682, long Preston, ingelton, through Hawes, great place to stop for some grub, then devil bridge, stop for brew than back through hornby to Lancaster, either a6 and a49 home or m6

A49 from Warrington to Ross on Wye, Monmouth , A466 to Tintern, m48 over Severn bridge to Bristol ( no toll for bikes) m5 to Exeter, a30 to portreath then b3301 to hayle, A3074 to st Ives and b3306 to st just and a30 to Lands end, a394 to Helton and a3038 to the lizard then back to parents near portreath..... Lovely little run.

As this is in the Scotland section, I best keep my routes mostly there

I love the blast along the A68 to Carter Bar to Hawick (Steve Hislop memorial) then upto Selkirk, stop off for some lunch at Fletchers Cafe, shoot over to Coldstream and back into England on the now way to bumpy A697 until you reach Wooler

Or

Carter Bar towards Bonchester Bridge, turn off to Newcastleton, to longtown back into England to Brampton, Alston and a much needed stop at Hartside cafe where there will be a few bikers tales to listen too with your tea. The route home take your pick of three, which is nice 8-)

Loads of great roads where I live, not the Highlands granted but good all the same and doing 200-300 miles on a Sunday is easily achievable and done on a regular basis.

Not necessarily my absolute favourite, but a good day out using Moffat as a base (or join the route anywhere).

I particularly like the Dalveen Pass (A702), and the road between St Mary's Loch and Selkirk.

The Glen Cafe at St Mary's Loch is a shadow of it's former self - Outside tables gone, poor food, etc.

Watch out for large rectangular manhole covers on some of the bends on the A701 heading south to Moffat.
