no the 2 "knuckles" should not be connected they are breathers.
connecting pipe looks like the one that goes between airbox and crankcase!

early 4xvs had a clutch basket recall - might be worth checking - should have centre punch marks next to the frame number for the various recalls

pads are easy to change and not expensive (sbs are my fave) while your at it give the calipers a good clean with soapy water and a can of brake cleane…login to view the rest of this post
