Hi, I am a Newbie.
Hi, I am a Newbie, and not much good at computers, but I will try to avoid upsetting anyone if possible. I have four bikes, although one is up for sale. Two Yamaha's, A Triumph and a Suzuki. My favourite bikes are my Yamaha's. I have a 1998 R1 and 2000 XJR. Of all the bikes, the R1 is the top dog. Because of my age and experience, I don't think I will ever ride the bike to its full potential, but I just love it. People told me I was mad to buy it, and that after 30 miles I would have to get off, because I would be aching too much, but I rode 300 miles to my daughters for the week end, and made the return journey, with no ill effects at all. I only have some photos of the bike when I first bought it. I have made improvements since, and will post some new photos soon. One of the reasons for joining the group, was to seek advice on the best upgrades. The guys at my motorcycle garage and I have long debates on what will make the bike more awesome.

Welcome in John
The 4xv is an amazing bike , it can be smooth well mannered torquey & easy to ride but a twist of the throttle & it's an aggressive beast . Glad you've found the forum , have a good look around & ask questions .
to be honest my 4xv has a can & k&n , it's running standard jetting & it's fast enough for me , any tuning & your fuel range drops

Welcome in john, and don't let anyone tell you you are too old fjr an R1, we have quite a few senior members on here. This is a good forum, loads of banter and laughter plus peeps on here have tons of knowledge, so ask any questions yiu may have. I once did 965 miles in a day on the R1, but I was younger then. Peeps also have a good sense if humour, well the majority do.
So welcome

Re: Hi, I am a Newbie.
Thanks for the welcome guys. I am 64 years old. I have had the R1 for 2 1/2 years. I used to see the bike every day and admired it. Then the guy that owned it said it was for sale. As I said, all my mates said "Don't buy it", and I was feeling as if they all might be right, saying I was too old, then I read an article in one of the motorcycle magazines saying that three chaps in their 80's had ordered themselves, what was then, the new Ducati Panagale, and I thought if they can ride a sports bike, so can I. It has not been without it's problems, but this you expect with older bikes. (Having said that a friend of mine bought a New Panagale and after returning it many times for problems, the final one being a new wiring loom, he gave up and bought a zx10) The bike kept conking out. The lads that do my servicing said the wiring loom was in a mess and the battery was duff. This was corrected. (If you like a laugh, here it comes) I then decided to have an evening ride out on Dartmoor. It was nearing dusk and I was way out on the moor. The electrical problem hit me again. I have to push the bike up an incline, and bump start it, and then switch everything electrical off. The bike is now just running on the battery. By this time it is nearly dark. I get a bit of luck, in that a car pulls out of a side road, and I follow that to the main A38. Now it is one of those pitch black nights, no moon etc. Determined to get home with the bike, I ride down the slip road hoping for the best. As the traffic goes by, I latch on to a VW Golf, and start to follow it, using its lights as my guide. Trouble is, the young guys in the car think I want a race, and we belt down the road at over 100 mph with me almost sitting on their bumper. They turn off before my destination, but luckily I pick up another car before the darkness engulfs me. This takes me nearly back home, but then my luck runs out. The battery conks out and the bike stops. I go to chain it to a post in a lay by, to which I managed to coast, trip and drop the bike smashing the fairing. One new fairing from China, and a new rectifier (it was tested but only failed when the bike was well and truly hot) and I was back on the road. I bought a dearer version of the fairing, but just recently have noticed little spots appearing, I am hoping to T cut them out. Probably a chemical reaction between the paint and the fibreglass. My Triumph Sprints tank is covered in big spots and apparently it was a common problem. I going to try and put on some updated photos now. Cheers

Wow that's impressive,64 yrs old and riding an R1
My gramps is 75 and kicking about with a kawasaki vn900 but he couldn't handle the riding position now of a sports bike, too extreme for him.
