Should know better

Post by Charliecloud »

Hello Guys
Been off bikes since 2000 when I sold my RC30. Now looking to buy an R1 5JJ model to use in the summer and on a few track days.
Had a test ride on a 2000MY bike a few weeks ago and was impressed by how nice they are with such a linear power delivery.

Off to trawl the sections and pick up tips on 'living' with a R1

Welcome in Mark
The 5jj is a lovely bike and yes the power is very linear until you hit 8-9000 rpm
one of the guys on here was selling 5jj that he'd tidied up , it has the original 5jj standard engine as a spare but it has a tuned 4xv engine fitted that he's still running in , have a look in the projects section it's Toms bike

Welcome mark and good luck 5JJ hunting - I can confirm they're dead easy to live with - usual stuff clean-lube-change oil at least once a year-fuel-wheelie ahem I mean enjoy ;) ;) steering damper recommended ;) ;) when u get one pics r essential and enjoy forum membership :)

I've lived with an R1 since 1998 - they can be gentle and mellow, but they can be mental and scary. It all depends if your throttle hand is connected directly to your brain.
:)
Even a 4xv will wheelie in the 1st 3 gears with no use of clutch - just open the throttle hard and count to 5 (cover the back brake!)
That said - touring on an R1 is nice and easy - endless power and effortless torque make for an easy ride - they are not peaky at all.

My throttle hand is directly connected to my reptilian brain. My inner chimp is in charge of the self-control centre

Good choice, I'm sure you''ll love it. The 5jj may be the best value R1, although it may be also worth looking at the 99 4xv. But then I'm slightly biased...

Nothing except I keep forgetting that there are 98 R1s in the UK. Sorry.

Welcome to the forum Mark.
The 5jj is a great bike and will have you grinning from ear to ear every time you ride it.
Make sure you check the gearbox out on a test run before you part with your cash as they tend to go in second gear if wheelied lots .
Good luck with your hunt
