Newbie (sort of) with a 2005 R1
Hi all,
Been a lurker for a long time so thought I'd let everyone know what I'm up to.
I've got a 2005 R1 5vy (had it for about two and a half years).
Over the winter I've pulled it to bits to play with the engine, not that it needed it but sometimes I can't help myself.
It's being rebuilt with kit gaskets, ported head, graves stacks and tuned to suit.
So far I'm stuck on the exhaust, currently have akrapovics with the Decat but need a full system.
I was the person that won the graves system on eBay for 340 on eBay, well that didn't turn out too well. The seller took the money and ran. EBay did refund but I'm without an exhaust.
If anyone has a full system (titanium) the want to sell then please let me know.
Suspension is on the list of things to do also, I'm sure I'll get more improvement from that than the engine.
Anyways hope to contribute a bit more going forward.
Cheers,
Nick Avis

Well I've been riding for about 5 years.
Started with a Kawasaki zr7 (God awful looking back but I loved it at the time). Then I got an r6 5eb, lived this also (there's a theme here). Had that for about 15 months before getting my r1 back in 2012.
I'll post some pictures up when I get on my computer as on mobile at the moment.
Done a couple of trips on her so far, Skye in 2013 which was brilliant and I'd recommend to anyone.
Then St year I did the south of France, was an experience but not as good a riding as Skye.
Also forgot to say that I had her on a local dyno before pulling the engine and she made 151rwhp. Not sure what sort of dyno it was but the place is a dynojet supplier so may be their machine.
I wasn't too concerned with the ultimate number, more important to set a baseline and see where we end up.
The head work is being done by my father, he's built many race engines over the years, both bikes and boats actually, with a fair amount of success. Not going to crazy with the head, tidying the ports and ensuring there aren't any nasty steps. Important not to take too much metal out as this can damage the performance. Also being skimmed inline with the yec kit manuals.
Will be interesting to see where she ends up, it'll be nice to get some more mid range as it's the one area that seems to lack compared to other litre bikes I've ridden.

Nothing planned with cams really.pod wrote:You getting any cam work done ?
Going more aggressive will sacrifice mid range and visa versa.
There does seem to be a number of threads on American forums about dialling them in differently to manufacturer specs.
At present it's my intention to stick with stock timing though.

Re: Newbie (sort of) with a 2005 R1
Hi, My old 5vy had 162-164bhp(can't remember exactly), the dyno operator wanted to custom map it to try and tweek some more out of it as it was a good starting point, just had K&N and Akropovic cans.
I might be wrong, but I think they sacrificed the midrange to get the top end in the 5vy, probably more over square bores, shorter stroke as they had to up their game with the new Blade, ZX10 and Gixxers coming out. 2004/2005 were great superbike years imo.(one of the few pro's of the competitive free market
