Hi ! Looking to get back on the bike this summer!

Post by Superfrank83 »

Hi everyone, used to be a member of a forum with a similar name to this many moons ago.. Loved getting out on it until I had a little off and a bump with a dry stone walls in the dales. With the help of the old forum I managed to repair my beloved 5vy! Unfortunately due to a family illness and supporting the Mrs through university my bike got imprisoned in the shed which is where it has been for the last 20 odd months! I'll be the first to admit Iv neglected it , once it was too cold for it to start and tick over I'm afraid I never saw it again until ! This Wednesday! Now , my mother who is the one that was ill has made a full recovery, and is for the time being clear and my Mrs has qualified as a nurse ! And after a long time looking after others it's now time for a little bike time!

That's my story :-) .. Now the problem!

As I said .. My bike hasn't been started or even touched for the last 18 months ... I left it in good working order with a full tank of fuel. Today o bought a new battery and went about getting it started to take it for mot etc . Unfortunately I didn't get very far , it won't start for love nor money... It cranks, but only once before a horrible ticking noise . Any tips !?

Thanks in advance .

Welcome to the forum mate and glad your mum has made a full recovery. Also congratulations to your wife for qualifying as a nurse, a lot of peeps knock the NHS but for me the doctors and nurses are worth their weight in gold, they do a truly fantastic job

Regarding your bike, after 18 months the fuel is likely to have gone off, I'm not too sure how healthy it would be if you had put fuel stabiliser in it.

Also the ticking or click click click noise you are getting, mine does that if I have flattened the battery. I know you have a new battery but could you have flattened it trying to start her, with her cranking but not firing?

They are my only thoughts, unfortunately I'm the least technical person on here, but the cleaver guys will be on Tonight, you probably know most of them being on the old forum.

Anyway, this is an awsome forum, members are great, always willing to help each other out.

Good luck with getting the bike started and post up some pics of her when you get time.

Welcome

Stephen :)

Oh and if you were born in 83? Assuming it's 1983 and not 1883 that makes you younger than my oldest but older than my youngest :)

Hi Steve ! Thanks for the reply and your kind words re the mother .. Yes I think Iv flattened it.. Just tried rocking the bike in gear to see if it all seems free and it all seems ok to me ! But I'm not very technical ! So will try again Tomo.. The fuel is probably duff like you said - fair point. And yes it's 1983 but the last 2 years have aged me :-) as for the nhs.. Know this is a bike forum so I wont wave my banner too much, but only after hearing 1st hand what the nurses and Drs do everyday do you truly appreciate just how hard they work. In my opinion it takes a very special kind of person to even begin to think about being a nurse . It's not something we should take for granted at all, especially as motorcyclists!

I totally agree with you re the NHS and doctors and nurses Francois, a few months back my mum was ill and she is now almost recovered, the care she got in our local hospital could not have been better, even if you had paid for it. Caring Professionals every one of them

Good luck with the bike, as I said, the clever peeps will be on later :)

Welcome back Frank
First off how unselfish of you to put your biking on hold so you can help sort your family out , So glad to hear your mother is better and congratulations to the Mrs , like Steve I have nothing but respect for the people that make the NHS its just a sh . . . . . . . Nope not going there ! Ive always been a fan of the work the doctors and nurses do and after these last two years we owe them a lot .
as for the bike you need to charge the battery , empty the battery & at least drain the fuel injection . Personally I'd have turned the engine over for a while on the starter with the fuel disconnected first st get some oil around the engine before starting it but I don't think you'll be needing to do that now . Fresh fuel & I'd imagine it would start , oh you may beech a new fuel filter

Hi jompy, again thanks for the kind words .. I'm sure anyone would put their bike on a backseat for their family ! :-) and I know they appreciate it , and more importantly it's onwards and upwards now!

I will definitely be draining the fuel.. It's not something I'd thought of . And once I get it started it will be getting new filters etc at the local garage .
The problem is .. I might not have explained very well.. Is not so much that it feels like it's not getting fuel or spark etc .. It's the actual cranking I think is the problem .. I only get a very short burst from the starter and then I get what sounds like a relay clicking very quickly . I'm trying to say is the bike doesn't get chance to run because the starter is not doing its job .. ???

Thanks again

Excuse the school boy explanation but it feel like the starter is seized or its struggling to turn whatever it turns :-) it has a bit of a go then say no way!

Nice one frank       :)

She is a nice looking 5vy,

Now get her her mot, tax insurance and yiur off.

Oh and please please take it easy, you haven't ridden for 18 months or so so you will be rusty, take the time to build up your skills again, and enjoy the bike.

We see too many people who after putting their bike away for winter jump straight back on it and think they can ride like they could six months earlier, as I say don't make their mistake.

Please don't take what I have said the wrong way, im trying to help :) but sometimes my words don't come out quite right

Wise words! I could hardly ride before so although not nervous I definitely have a "respect" for the thing :-) if the weather was better today it would be getting up to the garage .. But even Noah wouldn't venture out in this!
