hello to one and all

Post by maddog82 »

hi, .. my names luke ,... and im an alcoholic ..... OH WAIT WAIT ....wrong forum lol
ok ill start again, .. hi guys, .im luke and i ride a 5jj, .. well i bought her in dec last year and rode on the roads for a while, .. but with feeling how well the bike rode i needed to unlock its potential and ride it the way it was built too, so now she's my race bike in the NGRRC pi1300 class. #82
so far i have rebuilt the engine from the bottom up, new shell, mains, rings, top end refresh with kent cams, and tuned to suit, home brewed pipe using stock headers, .. i cut out the merge chamber with that heavy exup and made my own collector, into a yoshi mid pipe and A16 end can, .. but im now waiting for my full yoshi system to come in the post, ... also upgraded the rear shock to ohlins, keyless ignition system, DBR adjustable rear sets HEL braided lines, i have a fair few more mods i'd like to do but its just time.. money and figuring out how to do them.
thanks for reading :)

i'd love a 4xv, ... actually no this is my first, .. but im switched on, and a mechanic by trade, so noticing any issues when they arise is fairly quick, gearbox is good, and front brakes seemed to like sticking, .. so done a strip down, clean and rebuild on them and now they are good,
mods over winter will be custom made yokes with 31mm offset which my mate will be machining up for me, front shocks will be full k-tech, even tho ive only recently bult the engine i will be pulling the head off, porting it, knife edging the inlet ports aswell as a bit more head work and im hoping to try and find someone in the UK who can raise the RPM limit on stock CDI, if i can get that done then ill do uprated valve springs, etc, i'd also like to put coils sticks (from the 5pw i think) and finding some way of having an adjustable ignition timing control on it,

There's quite a few happy 4xv and 5jj owners here. And a couple of knowledgeable ones if you have any questions (not me!).

Just curious, did you check the gearbox when you had the engine apart? How was 2nd gear?

yh been looking through all the threads, it seems there is some good info on the forum, ... yh i had a look at it when i pulled the engine apart, there was a bit more than usual wear on one of the selector forks, so i replaced that, and the gear was a little worn, ,, i gave the gears to my mate who is an engineeeeeeeeeer and he undercut them so its all good now :)

like moise i know a bit about the 4xv & 5jj but some of the guys on here like Alex_H , Mezzer & r1aoc really know they're onions , personally i'm happy with a standard engine but i know theres a lot more potential .
as great as the 4xv is from what i've seen i'd have to say from standard the 5jj is the better bike due to power delivery !
theres a few threads on the differences on the two models , the 5jj has a better midrange which i love but for some it makes the 8-9000 rpm hit of the 4xv feel a bit more tame as the power delivery is smoother . If i remember correctly the main jests on both bikes carbs are the same but the 5jj has bigger pilot jets .
here's the standard post i put up to new owners of the 4xv & 5jj models , i hope it helps
" Those 5jj's are a lovely bike , they share a lot of parts with the 4xv like frame, wheels & engines are similar , things that are different are ECU , bodywork i.e. tank , fairing , seat unit & headlight also the radiator & wiring looms are different .
Make sure you look in the 4xv & 5jj sections .
Check the main 20pin white plug on the wiring loom that sits behind the left hand fairing to make sure its in good order & been greased as these can cause problems , the HT leads can break up when old where the plug cap screws on & cause misfire all you need to do is cut 5-10 mm off the end & screw the cap back on , also DON'T tighten the sump bolt up to 42nm its a lot less more like 15-20nm .
get the service manuals and parts micro fiches for both the 4xv & 5jj downloaded , use the online PDF link & down load the parts manuals from there .
http://www.partzilla.com can be helpful for online parts micro fiches for getting part numbers & checking prices in the states you can then enter the partnumber into O.E.M part search on places like http://www.wemoto.com
enjoy :)"

hi guys, ... hanks jompy, .. yh the 16 pin connector is ok... one which did cause a small issue was in the same area but a 2 wire connector, light brown/red & red which is for the ignition, ... any way i done away with that now as i have removed the ignition and wired my kill switch to be my ign power on/off and it works a treat,
there is a huge amount of potential to tune these bikes a friend of mine has a 4xv which he races in the same class as me, his was a bsb from new and never a road bike his bike is kicking out 193.11 bhp (at the crank) its a weapon !!!
with these bike most of the power is released within the head work. my local dyno guy and good friend can tune a standard bike with a full system to get 171 bhp (at the crank) just by working the carbs, if any of you are near highbridge in somerset its worth looking up johnathan burt from new road motorcycles .. he's your guy!
if you guys want to unlock a good bit of power then just go ahead with top end work, ... porting & flowing, + knife edging cutting down valve stems ... we use kent cams (yam17 to be specific) a +4 igntion advancer, kent say to time the cams in at 104 +104 deg but we time them 105 in 101 exh it really wakes the bike up, a set of flat slides, a full system with ram air box & filter kit, a good refresh of the bottom end but no need to go over size on the pistons, just match the weight of the pistons & conrods to the lightest one,do this by weighing the conrod & piston with rings pins etc and take the excess material off the side of the conrods, and run a total loss.
there is more you can do but then it becomes very unreliable.
hope this is of some use to you guys .
