Mine got stuck once on my 4c8 bloody bike would not go over 30 mph which was bloody dangerous on the M6 . It was like driving a car with the speed limiter set

The exup Made it so it wouldn't go over 30 ? It went into sone sort of safe mode?

Really, well I never knew that, the dealer sorted the problem that day, thankfully. Well as they say you learn something new everyday, cheers Luke :D

 you are asking me something mechanical  , sorry mate the question marks I guess we're a giveaway  , they never told me what was wrong with it, they said they cleaned it , I didn't realise it was dirty. It was the middle of winter and there had been a lot of salt on the road so I am guessing, which is probably completly wrong, that something had got stuck, but what I haven't a clue. As you know I'm not very technical

i think Luke was actually asking about the symptoms you mentioned "The exup Made it so it wouldn't go over 30 ? It went into some sort of safe mode?"

Haven't a clue what was up with it jompy but other road users on the M6 that day were not impressed with a 30 mph R1 [emoji33][emoji86][emoji85][emoji87][emoji204][emoji205][emoji79]

The exups job is not just for noise reduction, it was to give the engine low down grunt as well.
If it sticks shut the exhaust gasses cannot escape quick enough basically strangling the engine which is why they will struggle to go over 30mph.

That's obviously what Steve was saying it just surprises me it would have such an effect, my ace was exup wasn't operating hence wiring it open, I couldn't be sure if it was fully shut or being opened by the flow but it would still go pretty well
As for the low done grunt I asked several tuners (3) when I was contemplating removing the exup in the 5pw and all said it literally does f**k all one even called it the over engineered decibel reducer, one said you may notice a tiny loss of power low down but once it was dyno'd you wouldn't

I have never owned an Ace but had an 89 exup.
I have been lucky enough to have kept on top of the R1s exup valve so have never had it stuck in either position to know how it is affected.
As far as I remember reading the Ace has different diameter downpipes than the original exups, maybe thats why they were better with the valve wired open.
With the original exups you would lose a lot of low down power and the bike would bog down unless revved hard pulling away.
And with the valve stuck in the closed position it felt like you were on a heavily restricted bike that would just not rev at all.

That's exactly what my bike felt like, it was as though it was being choked

Yamaha probably thought they were on to something with the EXUP when they first fitted them, but these days I suspect it's got far more to do with noise reduction than anything else.

I like having the EXUP on the 4xv as means the bike will pull cleanly from low revs, which is great in traffic and tight corners. I've tried it wired open, and there's a hole at 3000 then at 3500 ....

The headers and collector are compromised by the EXUP, so a full system is much better than wiring the valve open.

sh!t moise are you saying a full race system is more efficient thus making more power than oem [emoji33] this is a youfuckingreekuh moment

Hey Luke, you and I both realise tha the OE exhaust on the early R1's isn't exactly the best for maximum power. But this is a thread about EXUP, and people were talking about wiring the valves open, etc. So just thought I'd point out that even with the EXUP wired open, the OE exhaust is still not going to give the same power as a full race system.
