Hello from Surrey

Hello there,

My name's Ben and I've recently bought an R1 14B and have quite a few questions about it, so thought I'd go online to find out more!

The newbie post said to write a brief description and riding history, so here goes:

I used to love going out for ride-outs with my mates, years ago, but sadly that's all in the past now and I only get to commute on the R1 these days. The rest of my time is taken up with family and chores! My last bike was a 4C8, but I highsided it on the road last August after a very localised afternoon shower dampened the road surface mid-bend. The bike was a write-off, hence the new to me 14B...which is a very different bike to the 4C8.

My riding history is fairly varied, but I started off riding quickly on the road, then started tracking. Then raced with Bemsee for several years, culminating in finishing 2nd in the minitwins championship. After that, I calmed down a bit and tried to replace bikes with a sports-car (VX220 Turbo), but the biking itch was always there so I replaced the VX with the 4C8, which was exciting right up to and at the time of its demise.

So that's me in a few lines. Nice to be here, I've lots to learn about the 14B. First on the list though seems to be the clutch plate fix (mine's grabby and very noisy as it grabs) and the ECU flash. Oh, and I've already put a 49 tooth rear sprocket on since the standard gearing seems a bit high, which has certainly helped, but the ECU flash seems like a 'must do' as well.

Welcome in mate. Let's see some pics of the new bike. I don't find the clutch too bad after adjusting it slightly. I haven't Flashed mine but have a PCV fitted which has sorted the on/off throttle. They're great discussions about the 14B suspension but for me it seems OK as I'm only doing the odd track day, commute and spirited rides.

This is the new to me 14B. It's a 2009 with 8,000 miles on it. Impressions so far compared to the 4C8 are that it's not as keen to wheelie (the 4C8 was 1 tooth down on the front sprocket, the above is now 2T up on the rear), it's shorter, stiffer and turns in better. ...and it sounds like a MotoGP bike...and drinks like one too. A previous owner painted the wheels black, which I really hope wasn't to hide anything, but it all seems ok so far. Time will tell.

The tyres are completely new to me too. I've put Michelin PR4s on in the hope that they'll warm up faster on my commute due to having way more sipes in them. I've run Supercorsas and then Diablo Rosso 2s in the past so the Michelins are a completely new avenue. So far, I'm not 100% convinced, but they do feel better when the temperature is around 5 degrees. I just hope they'll get sticky when the ambient temperature goes above 15.

Welcome to the forum Ben, cracking intro and great pictures, you are right about the sound track of the 14b it is truly awsome and yes, just like rossis M1, they are, as Colin says, a fantastic bike and a very rewarding bike to ride, Christ I'm missing mine already

Thanks guys. First things first, I shall investigate my noisy, grabby clutch. When I pull away from the lights with any fervour, it scares pedestrians with the graunch as the clutch bites, so that needs sorting.
