Yamaha r6 5eb engine problem / knocking
Hi Just joined .... My Names Ritchie 28 I've just bought a 2000 r6 5eb for £2000 it's immaculate condition bought it on 31st October been out on it about 6 times no longer then an hour each time and it's now got what I think is rod knock ( spun a bearing ) gets loudest at about 4000-5000rpm dropped sump and has a lot of shiny filings in bottom. I'm absolutely gutted. It starts and rides fine still just knocking pretty badly. I'm just stuck now what to do and what are my options any recommendations towards prices of repairs , new engines would be greatly appreciated. I'm thinking ...
1. Break bike recoup some of my money and buy another
2. Rough cost of engine rebuild
3. Rough cost of a 5eb engine second hand ( bit risky still )
I'm willing to put maybe £1500 into it if it means getting a rebuilt solid engine would stand me at 3.5k then but I intend on keeping it I Don't fancy buying another full 5eb with a "good" engine I'd rather spend the money on just an engine in solid condition.
Thanks in advance and sorry for the essay.

Hi Ritchie, sorry to hear about the bike. I'm guessing you bought it privately? so no warranty, however limited it might be?
Get some quotes for engine rebuild. Engines on fleabay are advertised at around £700 but as you say, 'bit risky'. It might be worth putting something on the forum in the R6 section and some of the guys on here may have some useful contacts for you too.
At least with some quotes you are in a better position to decide what to do.
Good luck [emoji6]

Hi rich what a bummer whereabouts are u based ? You could try Pete Beale for price of a rebuild if u can drop the engine out yourself it'll obviously save on labour

I'm just across the water from you, in Grimsby. Don't know anyone this side that could help but might be worth you having a chat with Spares Unlimited in Hull, they are a motorbike breakers and might be able to source an engine for you?
Hope you get it sorted as they are a great bike [emoji3]

I've seen one on eBay for £950 has reconditioned gearbox and new crank cases with 15,000 miles on it. however looks pretty grubby and when zoomed in on pictures it looks like gasket sealant has been used instead of gaskets. So for £950 I'm wondering if I could get mine repaired as don't fancy another one going bang I think I'd cry lol.

What colour are the shine metal bits? That should give you a guide of what's wrong with it, what miles are on the clock, has it been raced? I'm always a bit dubious about mint bikes with low miles. Could mean it's been tracked and race fairings put on it. Check for holes in sump plug, oil fill cap etc, means it's been lock wired for track. I would hazard a guess it's spun the bearings. Don't even run it up to listen to the engine as could cause more damage. Shame your so far away or I would have a look for you.
I had a friend who bought one mint and liked the high revs, used to shift from 4th to 2nd at 10000 revs, he asked me one day why his rear kept locking up, I told him engine braking and too high revs which is putting a lot of stress on the crank. He didn't listen, 2 weeks later he told me his engine was knackered. I had a look and he had smashed the crank, destroyed pistons valves and cylinder walls. Then he bought a brand new kwak lol.

If your looking to get it rebuilt then depending on what it needs and whether you've removed the engine yourself could be looking around £1000 same I would say for a low mileage engine. At least with a rebuilt it will come with a warranty (on parts replaced only)
Could consider a crash damaged whole bike, swap the engine and then part out or sell as a whole, should recoup about half of what you paid out for it.

Re: Yamaha r6 5eb engine problem / knocking
Hi thanks for replys.
And the metal bits are shiny, not big just like flakes sat in the bottom of the sump. the knocking sound at first I thought was coming from the top perhaps thought it had dropped a valve but when I revved it to about 4000-5000rpm it sounded like was coming from the cylinder. it dosent really knock when just ticking over though ?? Would I still hear rod knock if was on tickover. Mileage on the bike is 22,500 sump bolt looks normal dosent seem to have been locked for track. the guy I bought it from owned it for 2 years and I looked through he's Facebook and has plenty of pictures of it on there always looking maintained.
Does anyone know any good engine rebuilders close to hull ??
Thanks
