Hi all
Been riding 16 years, doing track days for the last 6 and I've owned R1's for the past 2 years now after moving from Fireblades and I have a little dilemma that I hope you can help me with.
Last year I purchased a 2016 Anniversary Edition R1 and chopped in my Matt black 09 R1. It's a beautiful bike.
However, despite spending the best part of £16,000 I have the following 'gripes' with the new R1 and wondered if any of you could offer any of your expert advice.
1) The standard exhaust sounds rubbish. You have to be up over halfway on the revs to get a decent exhaust note and a good exhaust note is so important to me. It has the akro end can that made no difference to be fair any my friend has a Scorpion end can and decat and its too bloody loud. Are there any decats out there that wont make my ears bleed? I like a loud exhaust but not stupidly loud.
2) I took the bike to Cadwell last year and it was brilliant. After the 2nd session though I got faster and faster and coming down Park Straight into Park, the brakes almost failed on me. I squeezed the lever almost to the bar; somehow I made it round Park unscathed thank god! The next session it happened again so I went to see the tyre mechanic and he fitted me some better pads and drained the fluid and put some top spec race fluid in. I went out again and it was a little better but still no where near good enough. It's prob worth mentioning that I rarely get overtook in fast groups bar racers practicing on the day so I do ride very fast. I have read a few post complaining about the front lever. I guess I'm just a bit peed off that I've spent that much money and the front brake is shocking. It's fine for road riding but for track use which is what i thought the whole point of all the electrics was, its crap.
3) Does anyone do a comfort seat for long trips on the bike? Be good to pop one on for long trips to the seaside/Matlock.

Hi Mark and welcome, I don't like loud pipes either but still want it to growl! I have an Arrow Indy titanium decat pipe and exhaust fitted and that gives the right balance for me. It comes out at 102db with the baffle fitted so is ok for the majority of circuits. Seton tuning make a custom exhaust that is large and comes with a flash tuning package but keeps within track limits, it doesn't lose power either. There is also a large Akro pipe that looks ugly in my view but does the job too.
Brakes wise what pads did the tyre mechanic put in? You could try Brembo pads as they are raved about on here. Or upgrade the calipers to Brembo as a next step. Then a brembo brake lever and master cylinder, plus discs for the full monty. viewtopic.php?f=57&t=11847&start=625" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.
There's plenty of upholsterers that can knock up a gel seat for you.

Hi Mark, welcome to the forum , the anniversary R1's look fantastic. Like you I'm disappointed with the sound from the Ackra but find the bike offensively loud when decatted. Not had any issues with the seat, agree with you re the brakes in OE trim they lack any decent feedback

In regards to the noise, you can have the Akra modified to take a baffle as I have just bought 1 already modified. I've been told with the decat and this can it blows 102db

Hi Colin
Many thanks for this, my borther is a fabricator and could probably help with this; do you have any idea how the baffle has been fitted? Is it permanent or is there a small alan key bolt to enable it to be removed?

Welcome to the forum.
Yes, there's been quite a bit of discussion here and on R1-forum.com on how to improve the brakes. Better pads seem to help, but from what I've read, you probably won't be happy with the brakes for track use until you bypass the ABS unit.

Hi Mark, I've also got the anniversary and I've had the same problem with the exhaust and brakes I've fitted a seton system on mine which is a really nice sound and is 102db without baffle so won't drop any power. I've also fitted brembo pads which make a big difference to me anyway. I will post a picture of the bike with the exhaust. I have now decided however to covert the bike back to road and bought a 2008 R1 track bike. I will post all the mods I have for sale soon once I've taken them off the bike.

Do you have a link or a guide on why the ABS unit has an impact (which I think I understand why) and also how to bypass it?
My 2012 blade was almost completely converted to a track bike but I still used it on the road occasionally. The brakes are the most important thing for me on track. I'd happily lose 50hp but have amazing brakes.
My decat has arrived so I'll pop that on Saturday day time and see what it sounds like. I'm guessing all the pets in the street will be hiding under sofas. lol

There have been more robust discussions on R1-forum.com about the issue! The simplest solution seems to be to remove the hoses, plug the ports in the ABS unit and fit braided lines.
