Unique 01 R1 from the US Where people are clearly Devolving.

Post by ChR1s HybR1d »

Hello friends from 'cross the pond'. I've been a long time fan of the UK sportbike culture. I used to get FastBikes back in the late 90s and into the 2000s when Frosty and Shaky were still writers. Have all their vids.. Crazy barstewards. Any way, I'm known on the US sportbike forums as ChR1s or Chris_y2k_r1 (From back in 2000 when I bought my first R1). My R1 is a bit different. The frame is a 2001 which I got for a paint job. I'm a sportbike painter/shop owner. The rear subframe was gone but the twin spar was OK so I welded on a rear from a 98 - knowing they weren't the same but thinking it wouldn't be that hard to work around (dumb thought). Right now the bike is down for general wiring clean up (tuck) and a new rear subframe / paint job and address a whole bunch of little details that need be lined out before it hits the road again this year. It has as I said some very unique features. I fabricated a front fairing for it that mounts the 07 08 R1 headlights to the 01 body. All the turn signals have been shaved and round LEDs have been molded in the plastics from and rear along with a bunch of cosmetic tweaks. The front end as a complete assembly is from a 2009. Triple (Yokes as you blokes call em), forks, front wheels and most importantly the brakes (WOW!) are all 09. I kept the 01 reservoir as it works just fine. Obviously it has 2008 lights. It has an 03 motor with an inline external fuel pump... I know I'm forgetting a ton of stuff but anyway - you get the idea - its different. I'm going to be (HOPEFULLY!) finishing the paint this year. It has been on the street for 2 years now (down for more mods here and there) and it rides and runs really well. Its a real treat.

This is the old version of the bike from 2015:

BY the way, I also did an 04 - 06 front fairing w/ headlights etc and that is for sale on ebay.... (fairing / lights / fairing stay and mirrors in the kit on ebay)

This is from 2016 - headed into a redesign that I'm finishing as we 'speak'...

Good luck

Thanks Fellas. (Mates!) ;-) I didn't want to re-post the same thing unless it was OK - since we have a moderator here making such suggestions - well then - hell yeah, I'll do a build thread.

Like I said... Devolving over here! I don't know my friend. I personally hate it. I even point out just how stupid it is. I try.. key word here - TRY - to explain that the R1 engineers went through such pain and effort to stack the trans on that bike - first of its kind with a vertically stacked trans to save maybe 30mm on the wheelbase.. And you monkeys go and buy THAT specific bike and stick a 20 foot swing arm on it... How tard'd are you? I mean, I get it on a Busa - they suck anyway (lol) - but an R1!? ... Typical response.. "But it looks so bad ass man...."... Me - "And so do all the fake breasted, strippers but you don't see me riding them either now do ya??"

Ha! Let me tell you, the vast majority of my American brothers are knuckle-dragging, muppet-wankers

And I have no problem with a little ribbing - I can give as good as I get and I can always appreciate some good humor at ANYONE's expense including my own. Funny is funny :D

Here's what the bike looked like when I got it... I'll start a build thread soon...

New color for the clutch and state cover - I really hate installing the clutch cover on this bike - serious PIA.

Regarding the clutch cover install... As for the those two alignment points, one on the cover and one on the linkage .... That was horse crap for me. If I went with those alignment marks dead on, there was not enough adjustment in the clutch cable to set it with the recommended slack. Aaahhhhh!!!
