Just joined from Gloucestershire

Hi everyone,
Just a quick note to say hello.Recently aquired a 98 4XV with 30K on the clock.Have been riding for a fair few years now,don`t drive so have owned a good mixture of bikes over the years,usually centered around a "main" bike and something smaller for commuting etc.
The R1 is the new"main" bike and replaces a Laverda Mirage which I had for a long,long time.Getting more used to the R1 now,and riding it makes me think that although I liked the Laverda,maybe I held onto it for too long and should have got hold of the R1 a little earlier,like twenty years ago when they first came out!
I`m sixty five now..... so brain and body are gradually re-calibrating to the new experience!
While I`m here I`ll just mention something that I discovered whilst looking around the bike.
There are nine black wires exiting the loom leading toward the rear lights which look like they feed what the Haynes manual describes as the "cyclelock"(not fitted).On my bike these have been cut and taped up,although two pairs have been soldered together before being wrapped up in black tape.I can understand that as I believe some of these wires feed into the ignition switch/ICU and earth.
I am guessing there would originally be a factory white connector here which someone has chopped off to fit or remove an alarm maybe?
I had the chance to look at another 4XV (low miles,not messed around with) and this one was exactly the same (chopped wires,insulating tape etc.)
Just wondered if anyone had any thoughts on this?

Hi Tony, welcome to the forum. There is nothing wrong with being in your 60’s and riding an R1, a few of us in here joined the sexagenarian club last year [emoji3] and our oldest member, rednine.... well he is in a completely different decade to all of us [emoji3]

I can’t answer your question on the wires, but quite a few of the guys have 4xv’s and know them inside and out. Duncan aka Moise from NZ is particularly good in this subject as is one of the managers in here Jompy aka monkey face (it’s a long story)

Glad you have found the wonderful world of R1’s, I discovered it 16 years ago and I haven’t looked back [emoji3]

So welcome to our amazing biking community, ask any questions you like, someone will have the answer... although there is one question that is never answered... what are the winning numbers for tonight’s lotto... lol

Sounds like you've hit the nail on the head concerning the wires . My wife worked for a yamaha dealer in south wales and if a bike came in with an aftermarket alarm fitted that was older than 3 years they'd automatically remove it as it wasn't worth the risk of it going wrong when they sold the bike .

Welcome Tony. There's quite a few of us with 4xv's, or have owned one in the past. Mine is the fastest colour and has done 75,000 miles.

The wiring diagram for the UK bikes shows an alarm fitted as standard.

Some electrical connectors are exposed to road muck and are not in any way weatherproof. These include the 20 pin white connector inside the front left of the fairing, and the stator and reg/rec connectors near the battery. The reg/rec tends to fail, although the stators usually last well.

Any questions please ask. Someone will have an answer.

I live in NZ and it's a bit dry this summer.

Hi Tony and a belated welcome from me, as mentioned already by Steve I'm well away the oldest bugger on the forum, but fortunate enough to find my 4XV really comfortable enough to travel distances to follow rounds of BSB plus a bit of the continent and the Isle of Man. I spent many years in Gloucestershire, living in Upton St Leonards and then The Reddings, just outside Cheltenham. Great riding territory, I'm always pleased to ride in the Cotswolds.As everyone has said already, this is a great forum with buckets of help and advice in addition to great camaraderie.

Hi Rednine,
I live not far from your old addresses down in Wotton,and it is good riding territory as you say,although I have to keep the R1 down in Bristol.No garage of my own,and hardly any to rent in a small town.I`m not all that tall so lowering the suspension (30 mm at back,15 mm at front) has made things a bit easier as far as general riding comfort is concerned.It wasn`t so much seat height but cocking an ageing leg over the raised pillion hump at the back!
I`ve done about 200 miles of short local trips but am waiting for things to dry out a bit before getting any proper mileage in.The roads/lanes around here get caked in mud this time of year,you should see the state of my everyday GW250!

Tony, I too am vertically challenged, 5’5”, I’ve had my M lowered via the dog bone ... it’s amazing how much more confident you feel when you can get your feet on the floor [emoji3]
