R1 1998 4 xv
I’ve owned this R 1 from new, it’s been of the road for some years now and I have started to get it running again, the bike will start with choke but won’t Rev at all, I’ve replaced the TPS sensor, plugs etc still no joy, anyone any ideas?

Have you cleaned the carbs? It would be worth getting them ultrasonically cleaned if it’s been laid up for a few years.

Thanks for your reply, I haven’t cleaned the carbs, what I have noticed is the carb slides seem to be sticking they are also not moving even when the throttle is twisted? I can’t think that’s right?

They are CV carbs, the slide is lifted by vacuum. Put your finger in the bell mouth and lift them with your fingernail one by one, they should go up and down smoothly.
It think it’s very likely if there was any fuel left in the carbs the jets will be blocked.

You could pop the carbs off and turn them over, lay them back down on a towel or similar, no need to disconnect cables.
Open one float bowl at a time and using the correct flat blade screwdriver, remove the idle, Pilot and main jets and soak,/blow through with carb cleaner, the Pilot circuit needs blowing through as well. To open the float bowls you want to get yourself the correct Japanese JIS cross point screwdriver, neither a Phillips or Pozidrive fits properly and they’re really easy to round out.
Or take them right off and take to a ultrasonic cleaning specialist.

Thanks again, it’s something I can do myself but I’m up against it at the moment, in the middle of a house build and move at the moment, but again thanks for the help!

My old R1 stood for a year or two. Would start but not rev or if it would rev hold those revs. Stripped and cleaned carbs and balanced them. Would start and rev but then idle irratic sort idle rev engine and then stall.

Thanks, that’s exactly what is happening I thought it was something to do with the carbs but didn’t want to strip them down without asking someone for advice, as I said I’ve had this bike from new while it’s been of the road for years I’ve had several other bikes sold all the rest but still held onto the R1.

I did, have tried lots of different things from Aprilla rsv4, 2007 R1 which I just couldn’t get used to, but always come back to old faithful!! Hard to beat.

Just one other thing, the last time I had this bike mot’d they nearly didn’t pass it because I couldn’t convert the speedo to kph, how is this done?

Hold both buttons down for about 10 seconds and it should change. That does NOT change the odometer though, and it will reset if you disconnect the battery.
You can also change a jumper inside the case but Jompy is the expert on that.

I’ve found someone locally that does ultrasonic cleaning so hopefully over the next week or so I will get them up to them and get the job done, the company is only working one day a week at the moment so it won’t be done in a hurry, looking forward to hearing it Rev properly again, HARRIS shotgun pipes on it too hmm!

Did you check the secondary coil connections and the HT leads when you changed the plugs? The ends of the wires can get a bit corroded - if so, trim them back slightly.

This lockdown has messed my plans to have the carbs ultrasonically cleaned, so I got some carb cleaner and used that to prove the situation, it’s now revving somewhat but still not there yet I’m now behind the 8 ball regarding time etc and I think the best thing to do is sell the bike, I have enough on my plate to be getting on with at the minute, is there anyone on the site that may be interested in buying a one owner R1 painted in Fortuna Yamaha colours? Please get in touch!

That would be a shame as you’re nearly there, was the plan always to sell it or did you plan to keep it and ride it again? If so you’ll almost certainly regret selling it.
Still I know how it is, sometimes you have to clear the decks!

Northern Ireland, yes planned to keep it but to much on my plate at the minute just can’t around to working at it, then moving to new house and all that entails, so as you say just clear the decks.
