R1 Newbie - First Bike

i used to get just over 130 miles before the idiot light came on and then another 25 on reserve taking it upto 6000rpm no higher .
did get 164 miles before the idiot light came on & i was getting kinda worried but that was mostly motorways doing 70mph

Education is brilliant. 5 weeks off now.

Plenty of riding time. Plus the weather is actually great for a change!

About 120 before the light comes then 30 miles on reserve.
Yes it is sad,but if someone nicks my bike they aren't only taking a R1,it my hobby and part of my life and i have put a lot of time and effort into her getting her how she is..

I found a nice route driving through Breadon today on my way to Pershore. Looking forward to taking the steed on a run tomorrow.

Out of interest has anyone changed their side stand? Mines looking a little worse for wear!

Does anyone live around Gloucestershire? I checked the ride out section but couldn't see any ones close.

The early R1's did suffer from chocolate side stands & it didn't help with how far the bike leans over on it , the previous owner of my half 1 replaced the side stand as it folded up on a trip to france , theres usually one or two on Ebay

I changed 1 coz the little metal bit snapped off and then I made a rookie mistake and strapped my bike down in a trail or on the stand and now it leans over further than I can get it going round corners !!

Good luck with ur new stead..just remember that ur learning curve is now vertical. We've all lost mates due to bikes, I've lost 9..all good riders. Go on you tube and have a look at motorcycle accidents some off them are fatals which is not nice viewing but sends the messgae home. A horrid example....I'm on my newish zx9r going to london to work on the A12. Wave at my mate going the opposite way...I was the last person he saw...10 secounds later unknown to me a car took him out..took the police 3 hrs to find his arm..he was killed instantly and left behind a wife and two babies. This unfortunately is not an uncommon and majority of the time not their fault but it dont matter when their in the morg... I may seem negative but sh!t man please..please book some advanced riding. I served my apprenticeship riding for 24 years 64 bikes. Been in hospital on more than a few occasions the list is endless. Oh and when the police turn up to your door to show your driving liscence to ur wife and they dont speek english so your wife thinks ur dead not just in hospital with multiple fractures due to another biker taking (frigin inexperianced rider thinking he could ride and took out not just me) you out you'll know what a womans rath is realy like. Chances are you will be ok well no actualy the odds are very against you...I wish you all the best budy and hope you enjoy riding for many years....good luck you need lots of it.

It's not only about the bike mate,the riding experience you pick up along the way starting with low powered machines helps..on a 140hp you won't get many chances if you or someone else makes the wrong move..

I have to agree with Siamblue here. its the experience that you need. a potential highside\lowside on a lower powered bike gives you a relative amount of warning and time to throttle out of it etc... an R1 will just buck and weave in milliseconds and have you eating tree with a heavy right hand in a corner.

PLEASE PLEASE Go to a track first and learn the feel of the bike.

Hmm, interesting thread. I stopped riding when our first child was born and shaved my beard off.

Please be careful, things can happen very quickly on a bike like the R1. Stick some red tape on your rev counter at 5000 rpm and move it up as you get used to the performance.

A moped does count, it very much counts, you get bike related road sense and the early scares on a small ill handling machine.

Your riding a bike that will bite even a very seasoned rider with its dynamic and focussed performance. Please don't confuse their genuine concern for bragging, they just know what your taking on. I have some doubt as to weather you do. I Have met people like you before. You don't have anything to prove here and are barking up the wrong tree to confuse genuine concern about your questionable (at best) logic with bragging. I hope the first crash isn't the last chance of a crash.
Been riding bikes for 26yrs myself and still manage to park bikes into the scenery .
Had loads of wee bike crashes in days gone by, lets you know yours and your bikes limitations.
Also gives you those reality check moments and educated risk assessments .
Sometimes I throw caution to the wind and go a bit mental....... but I'm still aware of the choice I have made...... it's familiar to me because it's true name is
" Experience"
