In the US we usually just go by year and model, so 2014 R1. In the U.K. it would seem you go by, well, not really sure what. I see 14B and 14BE, where exactly are these numbers from? I've seen them in part numbers, is this the part number for the bike? I know new parts for the 12-14 versions start with 1KB (sort of surprising the differences between 09-11 and 12-14). Just curious where you guys get the designation from.
It's the Yamaha model no. But you're right, it only seems to be used in the UK. No one in NZ would know what I meant if I said that I have a 4xv.

The RN number is part of the VIN but that's all I know about it!

Either is better than using just the year.

The year is specific in the US, very specific since we go by manufacture date. I know some people in the EU go by what's in their owner's book which is the first year sold and can be years after the manufacture date. This can definitely confuse things.

RN22 denotes 09-14 EU R1's and RN23 is 09-14 US R1's. It is part of the VIN which recognizes the region the vehicle was manufactured for. Problem is 09 is quite different from 14.

14B and 1KB seem a little more defining since that breaks it down to 09-11 and 12-14, but leaves region up in the air.

Just interesting to see the ways different regions ID their bikes.

Oh, just to throw it out there, I previously worked for Shoei Helmets USA. So if you have stupid helmet questions I may be able to help.

I might take you up on that. I'm very interested in the differences between Shoei helmets sold in the US and Europe.

Looked at my dealer's online parts manager and US 2014 R1's are listed as 2SG. So I'm going to mess everyone up and put that for mine :D
