I'm sorry if this is not the correct section to put this in but I am desperate for some help.
I'm sure you must see a lot of bike wont start posts but this one I think is a little different.
The bike had been garaged for a year, I done the usual checks had her mot'd and brought her home. Then took her out for a ride last Thursday no problem. Saturday I washed and polished her then Sunday went out for a spin. When I got home and turned off the ignition the starter kept turning the engine over without the ignition on or me touching anything, so I hit the ignition button which fired up the engine, as to not run the battery flat. Then about 30 secs later the engine cut out, there was a little puff of white smoke (which smelt electrical) from around the engine. And then when I tried to restart it I just got the clicking as if there is something wrong with the starter solenoid. The battery was replaced 2 years ago and is maintained through the winter and the starter solenoid was also replaced two years ago. I also removed the alarm and bypassed it a couple of years back because the internal alarm battery went flat. II would really appreciate any help or insight anyone can give. I've fixed a few bits on it in the past and am willing to give most things a go.
Thanks
Paul

Sounds like you've gotten water in the electrics , i know the 4xv's & 5jj's had problems with the white 20 pin connector on the main wiring loom that sits behind the left hand fairing panel . If the starter had been running while you were riding then the puff of smoke could have been from that so maybe check that too !
Hope you get it sorted

It sounds like the solenoid somehow stuck on - there are a number of possibilities. If there was still power going to the starter after you restarted the bike, then the starter may be toast.

I agree, sounds like starter was somehow held on, possibly solenoid jammed.
I would meter the starter motor between the terminal on the starter side of the solenoid to the chassis. Meter on Ohms range, ignition off, what reading do you get?
Is it the solenoid clicking when you try to start the bike now? Meter on Volts range, across the two big terminals, ignition on, press starter, what readings do you get?

Hi all.
Thanks Jompy, Moise, Chappo and Newsh for your suggestions, really appreciate the help. I managed to get the starter out after some fiddling and much cursing. Was totally fried (see links below) been quoted the tidy sum of £540 for a new one from the dealer, which needless to say made me cringe a little. Just got to find a second hand one now and get the blumin thing back in.

Ouch! It's unusual for a solenoid to stick on, so it may be the starter switch or a wiring fault.

Hi guys, so new starter has turned up and been fitted. The bike is running again hurrah. The only question I do have is that the warning light is on on the dash. I do however have the fairing off and hence the indicators unplugged, would this cause this to come on?

I wouldn't think so. Which warning light is on?

Its the engine trouble warning light, in the manual it says this comes on when an electrical circuit monitoring the engine is defective.

Hi and welcome, start your own thread on the Newbies section of the Welcome forum and tell us a bit more about you and your biking history. Get some pics up too.
PS nothing wrong with an older bike, my little 6 is 2001 [emoji106]
