Hi,

I'm Paul and I have just picked up a 5PW track bike and I am also looking for a 4XV road bike for my personal collection. I did a track day at Rockingham last summer on a friends R1 track bike and I must say that I was amazed by the power even though it was an older R1 (4xv or 5jj I can't remember which), it was easily the most powerful bike that I had ridden and I've been in love with the R1 since then.

I am going to need some parts and maybe some advice for the R1 so I need to up my post count to try and find a part that I am after, is the right hand engine cover which has the oil filler known as the clutch cover? I need to find a replacement as mine is damaged :(

Paul

Thanks, I have my feelers out for a 4XV so fingers crossed that I can find the right one. My other bikes other than the R1 for what it's worth are a Suzuki GSXR 750 K7 and a Suzuki TL1000R

Welcome in Paul
As Sam says Marko has a good example for sale , there's a couple of early R1's for sale & just remember the 5jj is more or the same bike as the 4xv but I think has more usable midrange so doesn't seem as crazy when you hit 8-9000rpm
Edit : EBay will be your best bet for a clutch cover but you'll be looking at 60-70 quid

Thanks everyone :) Marko's is at the opposite end of the country for me and I fancy a white and red one really, time will tell though.

I can't find a clutch cover on eBay, is the 5PW engine the same as any other model?

Red and white, or white and red, the best colours by far mate

that's my thoughts, my GSXR is white and blue and my TL is yellow and purple so I fancy a red and white or white and red one :)

Paul the best thing to do with parts is goto partzilla or one of the many other online parts microfiche sites & compare part numbers , i do this all the time .
heres the 4xv & 5jj newbie post i have copied for people new to the 4xv & 5jj

Those 5jj's are a lovely bike , they share a lot of parts with the 4xv like frame, wheels & engines are similar , things that are different are ECU , bodywork i.e. tank , fairing , seat unit & headlight also the radiator & wiring looms are different .
Make sure you look in the 4xv & 5jj sections .
Check the main 20pin white plug on the wiring loom that sits behind the left hand fairing to make sure its in good order & been greased as these can cause problems , the HT leads can break up when old where the plug cap screws on & cause misfire all you need to do is cut 5-10 mm off the end & screw the cap back on , also DON'T tighten the sump bolt up to 42nm its a lot less more like 15-20nm .
get the service manuals and parts micro fiches for both the 4xv & 5jj downloaded , use the online PDF link & down load the parts manuals from there .
http://www.partzilla.com can be helpful for online parts micro fiches for getting part numbers & checking prices in the states you can then enter the partnumber into O.E.M part search on places like http://www.wemoto.com
enjoy :)

can't tell 100% if the 4xv & 5jjclutch cover will fit the 5pw as the 4xv & 5jj both have the 4xv prefix 4XV-15421-00-00 and the 5pw has the 5pw pre fix & has the superseded number 01, 5PW-15421-01-00
just the model number may or may not mean that the part has been changed & although it's a superseded part could still fit .
i know the clutch cover from a 4xv & 5jj are interchangeable and have been lead to believe the bottom end on the 5pw & 5jj are the same other than the model stamping on them but i've never been able to prove this , Alex_H has messed around with 4xv , 5jj & 5pw engines so he may know better and MarkYPVS may be able to shed some light .
just for your info the part numbers for the crankcases are as follows
4XV-15100-00-00
5JJ-15100-00-00
5PW-15100-00-00
ohhh and the top half off a 5jj crankcase is stamped 4xv but i'm not sure about the 5pw

that's all good information thanks and today I have taken a better look at the clutch cover and I think it might be repairable which could be a solution.

i've just fitted a spare damaged generator cover that i've had repaired & powdercoted now i've repaired the one that was on & will get that powdercoted ready , it only cost me £5 to have it blasted & powdercoted , worth it compared to secondhand prices

That's cheap. I need to see if my local tool shop have a tap of the same size or the oil filler thread and if they do I can get my over repaired because it's just damage to the filler neck and it doesn't seal.

Deposit placed on what looks to be a lovely red & white 4XV :D Can't wait to collect it. It's only covered 23k so I'm quite happy with that.

thanks guys. Next weekend can't come soon enough, I haven't properly ridden an R1 on the road so I'm hoping that it's quite an experience. The one I used on track was an awesome bike, it just wanted to lift the front wheel on the power and that's not something that I'm used to.

If I ride it back I'll be taking it very easy, I don't know what they are capable of yet.
