Hi all, just bought a complete ie forks, rim, discs and brakes from a 2001? R1. Is there a way to identify the forks ie year, any part numbers on them anywhere?

Welcome to the forum Adrian. This is an excellent forum and there are no clicks on here, however one thing we always expect a new member to do is to make their first post in the newbies section, where they introduce themselves, tell us about their biking history and if we are lucky post up a pic of their bike. That helps them to get to know us and vice versa, and yes we are a nosey but very helpful bunch.

There are loads of parts catalogues on here so someone will be able to point you in the right direction.

Thanks Steve, feel bit of an impostor here as i actually own and ride a ........... HONDA VFR 800 2001. Ok ok dont stone me. Just bought a R1 front end with a view to putting it on my Viffer. Far superior forks than the Hondas plus more options to fettle. Other guys have done it before and are well impressed with them. Just struggling to identify them. Didnt Yamaha own Ohlins sometime in the early 2000s?

I thought I was going to be able to help with the question, but the limit to my fork knowledge is..................

Always hold it in your left hand, tines pointing downwards (unless trying to load peas).

The Early R1 forks i.e. 98-99 4xv & 00-01 5jj are the same and it has been said that there was a connection with ohlins with the rear shock but not sure about the forks , the later 02-03 5pw used the same front wheel but i think the forks were different .
i know f**k all but i do read alot on here

If they're off a 2001 model, then they'll be 5jj forks. The callipers should be blue spot.

Is that what you were asking?

Both the 4xv & 5jj are marked 4xv , the 4xv are marked 4xv-R and the 5jj are marked 4xv-R2 , both have the same blue spot calipers , marks are on the inside where the caliper bolts too , the later 5pw has gold spot calipers

Debatable, can a R1 tour long distance, ie 780 miles in 16hrs with luggage across Europe? I did last month, mind you my arse was killing me. Plus the sound of a V4 exhaust with no baffles in cant be beaten. I've been away from bikes for 32 years (last bike was a RD400, great bike) so the VFR is an easier introduction back in. Done three trackdays on her and numerous trips to Ireland and Europe this last year. Put a new Wilbers 631 on the rear end and other mods so far. The front end is next plus i want to get rid of that linked braking system! A right b.....d to bleed. Seriously the R1 is a great bike, no questions asked, i would love one but if i had one after that time away im sure it would not end happy. Also just bought a 1988 NC30 to do more trackdays and have fun on. The VFR is pretty good at doing most things, bit heavy, not that fast but brings a smile to my face. I just love bikes full stop, thanks to getting a divorce i can get back to them.

Mine are blue spot calipers. Will check them in the morning when i get up to the workshop. Any links on here to taking them apart/ upgrades etc etc.
Thanks all for quick responses. One thing ive noticed since getting back to bikes, bikers are a bloody friendly bunch!

John London has two Viffers & he loves them , yes the R1 can do the miles

Erh. yes it can did 730+ miles in one day on my 4c8 last year from saxony last year just stopping for fuel with a banging hang over serveral other members have done big miles in one day on theirs

Adrian , there maybe some stuff in the 4xv & 5jj section on upgrading the forks .

Fair play samr1 fair play. Think ill shut up Point im making is the VFR is a safe bet for a relative oldie newcomer like me. Only ever heard good things about R1s, met a salesman in my local Yamaha dealer who did a dealer day at Silverstone on the new R1 and he reckons it was basically uncrashable! The rider aids were that good. If i had the dosh i would get one, probably the only new bike i would buy along with a Honda VTR SP2, RC30,early Blade,RD400 again,early Africa Twin.

They made a few changes to the 5pw forks - reduced the travel, some internal tweaks.

I'm sure re 4xv/5jj forks were different?

think there were slight differences which is why the 4xv forks are stamped 4xv-R & the 5jj's are stamped 4xv-R2 bearing in mind i have both sets but i could be wrong

Yeah I seem to remember reading something about the internals being bigger on the 5JJ.

Different valving in the 5jj. I thought the internal changes were done for the 5pw?

Don't get me wrong I'm not having a go ,I've even owned a few Hondas [emoji20]

Adrian, nowt wrong with Hondas, ok that's me sent to the naughty corner , but being serious, if your VFR does everything you want it to and you love riding her then she is the bike for you. Like Sam, I have done big miles on R1's over the years, the most I did in a single day was 965 miles. Yeah the R1 is an out and out sports bike, but it can be a commuter, I commuted on them for 10 years 72 miles a day, big mile muncher, twisties, track, it's good at all of these things plus if you have the Big Bang one like me, it sounds just like rossis M1

At the end of the day we are all bikers, and all bikers are welcome on this forum, irrespective of what they ride, I too have owned some Hondas which were very capable machines.

You are a star mate for helping out Adrian and I don't believe that you know fook all as obviously some of the reading you are doing on here is sinking through your skull and being retained by all that grey squidgy matter you have between your ears....... Adrian if you did decide to get an R1 you can't go far wrong with the 00-01 5jj's for the combined "bang for buck" , "comfort" & "ride ability" I think other than the slight body work changes you'd notice between the 5jj & 4xv the main difference for me is the 5jj's extra mid-range , it does have the same power at the top but you don't notice the "hit" at 8-9000rpm as much as you do on the 4xv because of it , hence the 4xv feels wilder but I'd say the 5jj would be better for long distance & crusing , both bikes are great but then so is your viffer
Also someone mentioned they thought 1st gear was longer on the 5jj but to be honest I've not really noticed but then that doesn't surprise me either

SteveR1 cheers mate, 965 miles in one day!! Jeeez bet that was hard work. My 750ish was bad enough, 5 hrs of those were in the dark riding through France. Biggest problem were these flashes going off in my face!! Forward facing speed cameras? That was six weeks ago and havent heard anything - yet! A guy i met said some bikers subtlety alter there no plate characters - not that i condone that Was the first time ive ever toured, now im hooked.Been to the NW200, Ulster Gp,Ireland, Europe, Cadwell track day and going to the Manx GP next week followed by two more planned trips back to Ireland. When i bought the bike last year she had 17000 on the clock, now shes got 35000. Been looking at R1s on flea bay and seems you can pick up something decent for £2500, next year ill think about it.

As for part nos the set ive got have got 4XV - L stamped on them - 1998? Also got another set! with 5PW -R2 on them (dont ask, mistakenly bought them)2001? Which are the better ones?
