I have owned a Lava Red 2004 R1 since early 2005. Never really seen need to change it for another bike as it is comfortable for a sports bike for my 5'11" frame.

Pros: very forgiving bike as I am a little heavy handed on the throttle and late on brakes at times.
Cons: Gearbox a bit clunky when warm

Mods are R&G protectors (proved themselves twice - don't ask), adjustable levers and shorty tail. Currently using Dunlop Sportsmax SportsmartII tyres.

I used to work on a naval airbase and manged indicated 185mph on the runway!

About 2 years ago, on a wet November day, I entered a roundabout and spotted surface oil/diesel. I tip toed around roundabout at about 5 mph and about 2 cm from roundabout inner kerb to avoid it. Unknowingly I had still picked up some of it and on exiting the roundabout, even at the low speed I was travelling at, the rear came around and high sided me. Luckily a gentlemen in a van behind me picked me up and spotted what happened. He took photos of my rear tyre covered in the diesel / oil and the roundabout. 1 year and a claim to Highways Agency later I got a small pay out.

I can not recommend R&G protectors enough. All the bike sustained was a small scuff on the tail unit and scuffs to mirror, brake lever and lower panel. Apart a small chunk from top fairing, no other parts broken.

My body was not so lucky for a low speed spill. I landed squarely on my left shoulder & hip. No breaks but kept me off work for a month and some physio. If you like bruises I'll post the one from my hip to my knee. Still managed to march in the Veterans Remembrance Day parade next day. My little 'off' doesn't really compare to what those old boys went through.

Anyways, I have finally got around to fixing the bike's cosmetic niggles and hence post about lower side panel in the other section.
