Hi, just bought my first R1, a 1999 4xv, while cleaning and tinkering I have managed to put the speedo in KPH. How do I get it back to MPH?

Welcome in Bryn
straight out the service manual which you can open up in pdf format & then down load , it's in the 4xv section
"For GB and USA models only:
To change the speedometer display from
kilometers to miles, press the “SELECT”
button for at least two seconds."
And heres the post for people new to the 4xv & 5jj
"Those 4xv's are a lovely bike , they share a lot of parts with the 5jj like frame, wheels & engines are similar , things that are different are ECU , bodywork i.e. tank , fairing , seat unit & headlight also the radiator & wiring looms are different .
Make sure you look in the 4xv & 5jj sections .
Check the main 20pin white plug on the wiring loom that sits behind the left hand fairing to make sure its in good order & been greased as these can cause problems , the HT leads can break up when old where the plug cap screws on & cause misfire all you need to do is cut 5-10 mm off the end & screw the cap back on , also DON'T tighten the sump bolt up to 42nm its a lot less more like 15-20nm .
get the service manuals and parts micro fiches for both the 4xv & 5jj downloaded , use the online PDF link & down load the parts manuals from there .
http://www.partzilla.com can be helpful for online parts micro fiches for getting part numbers & checking prices in the states as theyre prices are cheaper or you could try https://www.fowlersparts.co.uk/browser/ ... bike/yzfr1
enjoy :)"

Hi Bryan, welcome to the Forum, hope you have got your speedo sorted, glad the guys have been able to help you sort this.

This is a great forum, any questions you have just ask, someone will have an answer.

Tell us a bit about yiur biking history, why you chose the R1 and what you think of her, you could also post a pic so we could all see what she looks like, yes we are a nosey bunch, but we are also helpful and friendly so join in the banter.

The link below will tell you how to post pics

viewtopic.php?f=4&t=144" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

So welcome

Stephen :D

Thanks for that, I,ll give it a go. I currently run a triumph tiger as my main bike but was offered the R1 at a price I couldn't resist. She is a keeper to be polished over winter and excercised next summer..!! I need to put the wheels back to black asap, powder coat or paint, i don't know yet. We're the wheels a Matt or shiny finish??
Thanks for the welcome guys.
Bryn.

mate your going to love the 4xv , they're a great bike . i would say from my experience the 5jj has more midrange which is handy for the road but it does make that 9000rpm mule kick a tad less noticeable . i've ran my engine with the old 75,000 mile 4xv carbs and the 20'000 mile 5jj carbs and the difference in midrange is big , it was pointed out to me that it may be to do with the 4xv carbs being worn but i'll stick with the 5jj carbs ;)
the wheels are shinny finish and i'm having the same dilemma with refurbing my wheels as i want them gold but was told by the powdercoaters i use that they won't do gold as its the only powdercoat colour that the lacquer is separate & they tend to react & craze , i need to get more quotes as one was local but £275 for paint and the other was a guy off facebook who quoted £170 but got upset when i declinded because he was a 3 hour round trip away and i'd hate to imagine how much postage for a set of wheels there & back would be .
