Hi just registered and saying hello.
Had bikes back in the 70's (FS1E, YCS5E, RD250 Dunstall, RD400) then had a break of 33 years and bought an R6 in 2013.
I am a bit slower now, of that there is no doubt, but the Bikes are not.

Must have been quite a shock, riding a modern bike after 33 years.
Have you tried an R1 yet?

Welcome in mate. There is a good few Scots on the forum. That was a long break you had from bikes, you will have noticed things have moved on.

Yes still miss the twosmokes but there is no doubt the market has moved on and the bikes are far better in reality.
Would still kill for a 500 two stroke but alas can never see that happening again.

Yes it was a long long time away from bikes but I never ever lost the desire to have one again.

Just never happened until.....

An unusual event.

The young lad, lives and works in London but was wanting to go touring in Scotland on his GSXR600. He needed some Kreiga bags so we all went to a bike shop in Balam to get them for his birthday. Family event, with the old guy (me) just going for a wee wander round the bikes while Mum and Son picked the relevant item.

Sitting there is a beautiful R6 in the WGP 50th anniversary colours. Now as my last bike was an RD400 in the white / red colour scheme, I was hooked. Add to that my previously trustworthy Son had mentioned that nowadays a 600 was really just a wee bike (about equal to my old RD250 - being a four stroke and all that:)). Now it is true that possibly this last bit of information had been mentioned just before he suggested getting a 600 himself but then maybe not.

All I can say he is a lying wee s.....

None the less I had made the leap and although early days I struggled to keep up with grannies in their corsas I can honestly say I am getting there now and have done 11,000 miles since May 2013.

Loving every minute of it.

So long story short but thanks for the welcome again.

She had bikes too which is another story but I will stop now.

+1 so why doesn't the wife ride anymore , my wife rides & at least as fast as me when the mood takes her

Ok, will get in too trouble for this one though.

Date/Time is Summer 1976 and I am a 17 year old with an RD250 King Kenny replica (or the best you get in those days) clad in Dunstall 3/4 fairing. Normally the best you got was a small quarter fairing so I am the bees knees with this one.
It also had quite pronounced dropbars and rearsets (important for this story) and this is my world.

This is my complete wealth all wrapped up in King Kenny's clothes.

I am at the local motorcycle club, mostly big hairy bikers with big posh bikes and me just the wee scheme based toe-rag.

So anyway sitting at the table is this girl who then says 'gees a wee shottie of your bike then'

So me being super brave I throw the keys across the table (never thinking she will go through with it) and then transcend into blind panic when she grabs keys and heads for the car park.

So now imagine this collection of burley bikers all heading out to see how this transpires.
Me, I am still being cool (ish) even when she climbs on the bike (still on centre stand) starts it up all revving and burbling as only two strokes can.

Big smiles from her sort of forced smile from me!

Now this is 1976, and nobody really had leathers in those days but the fashion for girls did have a popular option of full length denim jump-suits.

Similar to leathers but lets just say designed for standing up straight!

So now picture the situation as she carefully takes the bike off the centre stand (while still astride the bike) only to find that she cannot actually reach the bars/pegs due to the denim suit restricting her movement.
Cue the bike then ever so slowly tipping over and crashing to the side with me desperately still trying to look ever so cool whilst inside seeing my whole life savings heading for the deck.

Luckily for me it was on grass so no major damage and ultimately I got big man points for my overall lack of reaction.

Not sure I would hand over keys now though:)

Maybe that is why she is supportive now a days.

Suppose just because we needed a car to get through life. She never passed her test back in the day (had a 250 Yamaha herself) so would need to do all the tests.

Maybe when we retire though.

Can't remember for sure but I think she stopped shortly after an off on ice where she got a sore one.
Nothing broken but lots of pain at the time.
It was 35 years ago so a bit murky as to memory but I think that was a big part of it.
