Hi all,
After a recent trip to the Nurburgring (4th trip) which a friend brought along his rsv4 factory.
It promted me to get a bike again. I passed my test a number of years ago and always wanted an r1.
Now at 26 i have one.
Now my main hobby is cars and having my own workshop and a newly acquired house meant although I could buy an expensive new bike, I didnt want to.
So I set about looking for a project and one came about around 8 miles away.

Bought as an unknown I'm sure some of you may have seen it on trader and eBay.

The bike was described as having carb issues and it does indeed. They leak fuel like mad.
That didn't stop me trying to get a quick listen. So after a few cranks it caught ran for 10 seconds and flooded stinking the place out with fumes. Well it ran that's all that mattered

Any way this is getting a bit long winded I'll probably use it to start my progress thread off

Here are a couple of pics.

Plans are strip and rebuild carb,s general tidy, steering damper, that will probably be it for the 2015/2016 until I'm used to riding again.

Enjoy

Welcome in Andrew
As Einstein says "we do we do like a 'projects-thread' remember to take plenty of progress pics"
That 4xv looks very clean , seeing as your new to the 4xv i'll paste up the 4xv/5jj newbies post for you
" Those 4xv's are a lovely bike , they share a lot of parts with the 5jj like frame, wheels & engines are similar , things that are different are ECU , bodywork i.e. tank , fairing , seat unit & headlight also the radiator & wiring looms are different .
Make sure you look in the 4xv & 5jj sections .
Check the main 20pin white plug on the wiring loom that sits behind the left hand fairing to make sure its in good order & been greased as these can cause problems , the HT leads can break up when old where the plug cap screws on & cause misfire all you need to do is cut 5-10 mm off the end & screw the cap back on , also DON'T tighten the sump bolt up to 42nm its a lot less more like 15-20nm .
get the service manuals and parts micro fiches for both the 4xv & 5jj downloaded , use the online PDF link & down load the parts manuals from there .
http://www.partzilla.com can be helpful for online parts micro fiches for getting part numbers & checking prices in the states as theyre prices are cheaper or you could try https://www.fowlersparts.co.uk/browser/ ... bike/yzfr1
enjoy :)"

Thank you so much for the welcome chaps. i did a little bit on the bike this eveing and took a few pictures so i will start up on my progress thread. i'll be sure to do lots of reading. i have the service manual which i got from a website i cant rember and the parts one i will have to scout out. Thanks you!
Does this mean a 5jj steering damper would fit or not becasue if it mounts infront of the tank ala "916" style could there be a possibility of it fouling the tank?

i think the main change between the tanks is where the seat meets the tank & the 4xv has bigger side covers , calsport list from 98-00
good price too ;)
