My name is steve, I've been riding since 93, owned cb125, mtx125, XT600, XTZ750, YZF600 thundercat, three hayabusa's 99,03,09, now FZ8 and an R6 to compete in this years Moto gymkhana championship.
I've been chairman of the Nottingham advanced motorcyclists for 18 years, and senior observer for 14 of them.
Left about 4 years ago to compete in Moto gymkhana. I've never had so much fun in first gear. And my bike handling skills has grown so much.
I've been using a 99 hornet 600 for the last 3 years, but just before Christmas I sold it to a pair of friends who are wanting to start the sport this year, and bought my 99 R6.
It's completely different, and to be honest not the best bike for our sprint stop turn sprint sport. But as ive bought it and have no money to swap it, I'm out to prove it can be competitive.

Hi Steve, welcome to the forum.
That sport looks pretty awesome and obviously a great tool for everyday riding I should imagine. My low speed riding skills aren't the best, but then come to think about it neither are my high speed riding skills, in fact I'm terrible at riding a bike full stop...think I'll just go back to song writing.

Hi guys, here's a little short video of one of my training runs this last week. I'm practicing what the Japanese call the "A" course. The cones or pylons as we call them are set in four rows of two. They are 10m apart at 10m centres.
Every one around the world uses the same set course, so that you can post your times to see how you rank compared to every one else.
At the moment I'm running at 1:17, but when using my old Honda hornet I was doing it in 1:10.
But I only bought the R6 at Christmas, and since then I've done the straight bar conversion to it and fitted a race cage to protect it when we crash. And since building it I've only had 26 hrs of practice, so there is lots of room for improvement still.
My first comp is sat 7th may so I need to keep banging out the hours to get up to speed so I don't embarrass my self.
If your interested I'll keep posting pick and videos for you to follow my progress.

At the moment I'm running Bridgestone 021's but I've been using maxis tyres for 3 years, mainly because they are cheap. We practice on a concrete car park and it destroys front tyres quickly, in about 300-400 miles.
And no we're not allowed tyre warmers.
At a comp we gave a warm up course to go around and around for 30 mins before we go to the starting box. So you'd tyres and brakes get very warm before you attack the course.

300 miles of practice on my hornet, down to canvas. I did this twice, so I stopped using expensive tyres and went cheap.

pilot powers are getting pretty cheap now

Hi guys, I have good news, this week I've removed the carbs and fitted #35 pilot jets, which are the same size as they use in California. Smaller than the rest of the world uses..
So because the bike is running very rich, it was causing it to bog down below 4000rpm and we hoped that fitting the smaller jet could reduce the amount of fuel being pushed into the carbs whilst on a closed throttle doing rotations.
And when I took it back to SPR RACING in nottingham yesterday we discovered that it's worked a treat, and I've gone up 10bhp at 4000 revs too.
I've been out tonight to try it out at gymkhana, and it feels great. So I can get to some serious practice now before the first comp.

Here's a little video from tonight's practice, this is a new world course being raced around this month, the quickest time so for is low 40 seconds, my best was 51 so lots of room for improvement.
