Hi folks,

Picked up this 2002 R1 last weekend. 160 mile ride home to Cambridgeshire get to know it left me a bit tired, and considering I hadn't rode a bike for over a year...

But I love this animal. Has lots of extras on it. The race dash is especially fun, as is the Akro pipe.

I have removed the chrome Yamaha music logos :)

Welcome to the forum Stew, nice opening post and pics too    , we can all see that you have a beautiful example of the 5pw, and her colour scheme is fantastic.

Tell us a bit about your biking history, what other bikes you have had, what you liked about them and didn't like, it helps to get the thread going and for us to get to know you and vice versa .

This is a great forum, members are helpful and knowledgable, so any questions just ask. Talking about people being helpful, if a member needs something fir their bike we scour our garages to see if we have it, or if someone needs something looking at at the other side of the country a member near there will pop over and take a look and provide feedback, I fact we are more like a community than a forum but hay, that's how we like it.

So welcome to the yamahaR community

Stephen :D

I can't take credit for this bike, I've only owned it a week.

I believe they could well be PFM discs. Brembo sintered pads with them.

Hi Steve,

Thanks.

Only been riding(officially) since 2012 but first rode a motorcross bike when I was little.

First bike was an SV650s, then after the first year a 2000 RSV Mille, the V Twins are great. Then I did a deal with a friend for his 954 Fireblade. Amazing bike, and completely deserves its reputation. Due to finances I had to give it back to him. He was more than happy to have it back. I was looking for another 954 as I said. I did think maybe a 2004-2006 R1 as an alternative, but this one came onto my radar and the rest is history.

I'm loving this R1 already, and just need more riding time as it's WAY beyond what I'm capable of. My friend who linked me to the advert has a rather nutty SRAD GSXR750(we're pretty sure the engine has been tweaked), well he had a quick blast on this on my private road(literally) and he said it's just stupid fast. Ha... :o

Stew, nice write up   , if we are all being honest, our R1's are way past our abilities too, I mean if I could get the maximum out of my bike I would be riding in BSB, WSB or MotoGP :D , but boy, I do enjoy riding the R1 with my limited capabilities :D

Stickers are gone...and I kinda like the seat...kinda. Why, did you want to buy it? lol

It does have a Scottoiler which I'll be removing this weekend. If anyone is interested? I'll create an advert when it's out.

I rode in to work yesterday morning, know that the afternoon would be a lovely ride home. The morning was wet/cold/not confidence inspiring. But the bike felt totally uncommunicative and I had no confidence.

Then I remembered the place I bought it from had fitted a new rear and had put the pressure up to about 40 when it was sat a couple of weeks waiting for me to collect.

Ah! Let's check the pressures...40f, 45r. Hold on, 40 in the front, and 45 in the rear... :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o Might explain a few things.

Pressures dropped to 35/36, and oh my, a different bike. The ride home was just amazing.

I should have checked the pressures before hand but just didn't think about them as I'd only ridden in dry conditions, and thought because of the suspension it was just a bit stiff and skittish(because race bike?).

So it continues...

Having removed the Chrome Yamaha music stickers, I've now removed the seat cover(it was a cover...) and also removed the ScottOiler. Both are for sale.

I think the seat cover didn't look so bad, but hey, it's off now and I'm sticking with it. :)
