Hi All

Not long purchased a rather nice 99 R1 but sadly the battery has given up the ghost.

To save me lengthy searches what is the battery of choice for me?

If youve never tried a LiFePO4 (lithium iron phosphate) battery they are amazing.

I went with an O.E.M battery as yusa are a good make and they last well , at £45 delivered in a few days I was well happy , take a look

Yes, lithium batteries are lighter and last longer. But they have this annoying habit of catching fire - Boeing were very lucky not to lose a Dreamliner. And just think about where the battery is on your bike.

Many lithium batteries now incorporate electronics to reduce the risk of damage from internal and external short circuits. But not Shorai, who claim that their technology is too advanced to need such niceties.

I have a Yuasa in both my bikes. Cheap, should last for years, and unlikely to burst into flames.

Battery now on its way from mdsbattery.co.uk for £45 including delivery. Local dealer wanted £75.

Love the R1 which I bought a couple of months ago. Almost standard (how I like them) in blue. It may be seventeen years old but you certainly wouldn't know it - a brilliant bike and a definite keeper.

Previous bikes in last few years:-

GSX1400 - great fun, comfy but handled like a well soiled mattress.

Aprilia Falco - brilliant hugely under rated bike with a fabulous engine.

RRX Blade - good bike but not a patch on the R1

Off to Manx GP at end of month, was last at IOM on a bike in 1980 ( I think ) when Hailwood made his final appearance.

Those were the days.......

mate heres a few tips but do yourself a favor and have a bloody good read of the 4xv & 5jj sections , theres a ton of usefull info in them
"Those 4xv's are a lovely bike , they share a lot of parts with the 5jj like frame, wheels & engines are similar , things that are different are ECU , bodywork i.e. tank , fairing , seat unit & headlight also the radiator & wiring looms are different .
Make sure you look in the 4xv & 5jj sections .
Check the main 20pin white plug on the wiring loom that sits behind the left hand fairing to make sure its in good order & been greased as these can cause problems , the HT leads can break up when old where the plug cap screws on & cause misfire all you need to do is cut 5-10 mm off the end & screw the cap back on , also DON'T tighten the sump bolt up to 42nm its a lot less more like 15-20nm .
get the service manuals and parts micro fiches for both the 4xv & 5jj downloaded , use the online PDF link & down load the parts manuals from there .

1 - "choose file" and browse to the image you wish to upload from your PC
2 - In the "resize" drop down choose either 15" or 17" screen (15 is enough and fast too)

an R1 a day keeps insanity away

Welcome mate, my better half has an Aprilia Falco with a much needed Ohlins rear shock fitted.

It's a nice bike but I don't enjoy working on it at all, as every job seems to involve removing the tank which is a pain especially as they tend to stretch length ways over the years and are a pig to remove!

Battery ordered at 1530 on Thursday and delivered and in bike at 1230 on Friday.

And it was £30 cheaper than local dealer.
