Welcome in Mike, hope the get the next bike, personally I would go straight to the main course that being an R1, I may go for an older version with a less naughty power delivery. The R6 is a great bike but you have to rev the hell out of it so to enjoy it you would be riding flat out everywhere.
Enjoy the forum, we are all here for the same thing fun

Welcome Mike, PJC normally talks crap, but he has a fair point in this case.
Look forward to seeing what you get though

Personally I disagree with u both (its not the first time

) the sv650 has comparable performance to a 400cc sports bike and I'd always advise going up in stages and mastering each level, (although he might be fifty and owned lots of litre bikes) The R1 is a massive jump and could easily be a fatal move for the inexperience rider (Ive lost friends due to this, one even had the sv moving to a gsxr1000k1 hopefully he enjoyed the three weeks of ownership)
But each to their own

Hi mike and welcome. I went from a 650 to a 4c8 r1 after six months and loved it. My r1 is with me forever now that I have changed the bars
The difference in power if you ride it right is unbelievable and I mean unbelievable
As Luke says it will spit you off no danger if you ride it badly
