New 4XV owner

Hi everyone
I recently picked up a 1998 4XV red and white R1 to re-live my old R1 days.
This is my 3rd R1 over the years, having previously owned a new 2000 5JJ and used 2003 5PW.
Still great fun even though she is 22 years old !
I do need some help with a wheel bearing nightmare - will post in the correct forum as soon as I can.
Cheers
Phil

Hope you enjoy the forum and the banter buddy , please feel free to join in .
Theres loads of info ,mods and help for the 4xv on here .
You may find the 4xv lacking in midrange compaired to the 5jj as the 5jj had different pilot jets , also theres an alternative fan switch that turns the radiator fan on at around 94° instead of 104° .
I'll have a look at your problem in a bit as at the moment the dogs mithering me for attention and the wifes giving me "the look"

Welcome Phil. Yes, there are a few of us who still ride or have owned a 4xv. You should have bought the fastest colour though... [emoji3]

Welcome aboard, as Steve says there are some very knowledgeable guys on this forum and many R1 challenges have been encountered and solved by members previously. Enjoy the 4XV

Duncan... funniest thing I’ve heard all day [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23][emoji23][emoji23]
Apart from Jompy buggering up his lawn mower [emoji849]
Phil... there is a bit of red/blue banter on here , each side thinks their colour is fastest... whilst everybody actually knows Red I’d fast as fook and blue is... well ....left eating Reds dust.... [emoji1303][emoji4]

But not as lacking as you lot say it’s not like a big hole it’s just a double kick of power.

theres a noticeable difference between the 4xv and 5jj midrange and for general road use it dose make a difference , the 4xv midrange is ok but the 5jj's is better i know which i'd rather have and it's a cheap upgrade

The only downside I can see is missing the characteristic double kick one at 5k and a second around 8k

i see what you're saying and the 8k hit is softened slightly but it's still there and it'll still lift the front easily .
I think you're going to have to take the Half-one for a spin just to see how sh!t it really is

I could not believe the difference it made to my 4xv. Mine just pulls harder as the revs increase; you don't really feel a kick at 5k or 8k.

It was one of the things I loved when I test ride the original 4xv. Mine didn’t doo it after the full system and heavy airbox mods can’t complain I enjoyed the extra 14bhp it got.

Hi guys
Thanks for the welcome messages.
I was frustrated and then relieved to get my wheel bearing out that I missed these posts.

Wow, it even has the original can and mudguard. Very nice.
Yamaha just nailed it with the look of the 98 4xv. Hard to understand why they changed it the following year.

You have probably realised Clarky aka Karen, is deluded, he did manage to overtake a milk float the other day, but he did need a mile or two run up to get upto speed for the delicate, exciting and extremely dangerous manoeuvre on a “fast blue R1” [emoji1303][emoji23]
He nearly blew the cobwebs off his mirror [emoji102]
