Hi guys on the look out for a R1. Going tonight to look at a 2001 R1. My concern is he says he has only one key. when I asked about the master key he said he has only the master remote ? Is there such a thing and can you get a key cut from it ??? need a quick reply as I'm not buying to I know if I can get a spare key cut that works with the bike.

I would think the master remote refers to the alarm .
I don't own a 2001 R1 but I recon it should still have a master key.
I maybe wrong.

I didn't have a red key for my 1998 but I'm not sure about the 2001, sorry mate

I only have two "normal" keys for the 5PW I'd guess they would be on the newer versions

I have 2 normal keys for both mine,a 4XV and a 5PW,im pretty sure they(5JJ) dont have a "Master" key

Hi thanks for that guys. I bought the bike anyway it was to good a looking bike to turn down over a key. ill post some photos soon.
Now he give me a spare key with it but it needs cut. I'm not sure how I'm going to go about this as the main key has button on it to arm the alarm. As soon as the bloke left me the bike, and went on his way, I jumped on the bike took it off the stand and off went the alarm. Had to run in to the house for the key to disarm it. It seems to arm its self after about 30 second after removing to key by a audible beep. Good alarm system yes, but it could prove to be a problem. IE what when the battery goes dead in the key ? Anybody got any advice on this type of alarm, should I remove it. As there is no point getting a key cut if I need a remote to disarm the alarm. Any thoughts on it guys ?

Probably a Meta alarm,you should be able to get another fob(at a price!!),get in touch with a Meta(if that is the manufacturer) dealer and they should sort you out

Replace the battery every year, job done. Think i'd leave it on there

Well now you have the bike, just like to welcome you to Club R1 and this Forum.

Ive had bad times with alarms. The datatool on the r1 seems great but they do help drain your batt if not riding often. And like you said, what if the fob fails? Like the one did on my mothers er6n. Ended up pulling the thing out and wrapping it up in airing cuboard for a day or two till it stopped whining lol. The datatool on the r1 is much more hardwired in. Actually has pins into ecu etc. Didnt fancy chopping about with that so i left it be.

2002r1jon your spot on. I checked it out and its a Meta alarm. I looked at there website and you can get another fob. But you need a code number supplied with the alarm so it looks like I'm #@;# Better guard this one with my life and change the battery once a year then.

If you have paperwork for the alarm,it should be on there,if not,a dealer will be able to source it for you off the numbers on the actual alarm body

Congrats on the purchase, the batteries in my keyfobs are now 10 years old and still working fine (kiss of death) methinks I might look into changing them.

Congrats on buying the R1 and as for the key situation,you dont get a master key on the 2001 5JJ as with the 4xv & 5pw cos they aint coded to the ecu,as for the alarm like jon said get in touch with Meta and im sure they'll sort it for you.

Hiya mate welcome to the site, nice looking bike you've got there! I've got a Meta alarm on my bike, and never had a problem with the fob in the 3 1/2 years I've had it...just make sure you run the bike up to temp every 2-3 weeks when not in use, or you'll find your bike battery flat if left too long

Not really a big fan of alarms, if they go wrong your ****** watched a few clips on you tube on the Meta alarms how to bypass etc. I think there is a internal battery in them and when it goes its finished. Could be wrong but seen a few clips of this on you tube.

my alarm key fob only failed, late in the eve in the middle of france, evidently because some moisture got in when it rained during the day. never happened before, and was a bit of a problem as drying it with blow-drier etc did not help. thankfully, i managed to get the remote bypass code from my wife who thankfully stayed at home - otherwise it would be a very expensive tow-in. have a spare key/fob on long trips!
