Howdy,

Just bought a 2006 R1 today, candy red, gold forks, crash bungs...that's yer lot haha.

Had a 90 minute ride home once I picked it up and I'm surprised at the comfort level, wrists ached a bit and the engine got ruddy hot in traffic but it's definitely a step in a different direction from the 2010 Street Triple R that I previously owned.

The R1 has 6100 miles on it, I've not gone through the service intervals just yet but will it be due anything major sometime soon? Also, looking for good shorty levers and bar end weights, any advice on those?

Will get some pics up tomorrow once it's been cleaned to within an inch of its life!

Welcome in mate, they are surprisingly comfy aint they , nothing major yet,6k is oil an filters and check over, I know the valves don't need done till 24k , 12 k im sure is suspension fluids and filters oils etc, enjoy the site

Thought as much, should I put the bike's age aside? I assumed oil (in all its forms) degrades over time. TBF it's way less jerky and 'stumpy' than the Street so it's hard to tell if the fork oil needs changing.

Can anyone recommend (other than Steve Jordan) someone to take the bike to, to get the suspension tuned to my weight and riding style?

I love the Lava Red (I think it's called) colour scheme - it really suits the 5VY shape. It also polishes up a dream.

The 5VY (the only model I have ridden) - is a supremely comfortable bike (for me-at least) and I don't get sore wrists. Might be worthwhile checking and experimenting with the orientation of the grips and the levers?

I've got short CRG levers on mine, but having tried the full-size CRGs before - actually prefer the long ones.

If you are looking for a halfway house (on price) between ASV/CRG/Pazzo and the El-Cheapo Chinese ones - I started a thread on here "Cheap-ish levers". The ones in question are TUV-approved, but are a fair bit cheaper than the ASVs etc.

I had the CRG RC2 levers on my Street, very nice and well constructed. I'm looking into light action clutch levers as my left wrist is a weak point for me these days (not through excessive tugging might I add). I've got a double bubble on order as the chest blast is immense at speed, also ordering some R&G bar end sliders. Thinking about doing the seat mod as my nuts were becoming very friendly with the tank on the way home today!

This is going to sound mad but it doesn't feel as manic or as naughty inducing as the street. It feels more refined but it does get to license losing figures a tad too easily haha. So nothing I can't HANDLE and we'll likely keepme more reigned in onthe road, the street turned me into a hooligan.

Having said that, I've not taken it above 10krpm yet and I believe that's where it gets bat sh!t crazy? Gonna try and save that for some private roads however

It will just be warming up at 10k rpm John!

the 4xv get's its second wind ( mule kick ) around 8-9k , you'll love it

Ok so to bore on, here's my biking history (after driving for 12 years!)

Little YZF-R125 - got written off after some twonk leathered into me at Chiswick roundabout, two broken ribs, two smashed knuckles and bashed knees later, I decided the lack of power and road presence was enough to justify me getting my DAS done:



Then I moved onto this SV650 for a year or so, loved the twin's torque but got bored and had money so moved on...





to this...my last bike, a Street Triple R, loved it but had to mod the crap out of it to make it something I really wanted to keep. The seat is disgustingly uncomfortable and the suspension is as they say, stupendously hard and harsh, buckaroo with every bump regardless of suspension tweaking, photos are from when I bought it to when I sold it to show the progression



then Sargent seat (ouch £££) and arrows, d3 heel guards, mirrors, tail tidy, frame sliders and so on



Then an SP Engineering GP exhaust etc



Then I sold it after getting bored of it, the ride was minging...they're overhyped in my opinion, still an undeniably great bike though.

So then the meaty bit...moved on to this as of yesterday (this is after a quick spring clean this morning, hard work without an ABBA stand!)









Going to be getting rid of the power ranger stickers on the tail unit and maybe respray the lower fairings the same candy red, just looks a bit tacky at the moment in my opinion, probably do the seat mod/send it off to be leveled out, change the tyres as they're qualifiers and I'm not a fan, keep it a year then chop it in on a VFR1200 so I can tour around Europe with the mrs (promised her I'd do it this year but then I wanted to scratch the litre superbike itch!)

Sorry bud mine's a 4xv (98-99) yes yours is a 5vy & a good looking one after you've sorted the body work out like you say your going too , some have said on here that the 5vy was the animal of the R1 family .
i can see why you'd be getting the VFR1200 to be touring on but you'll miss the 5vy .

i alway's liked the speed & street triples but price put me off & then Jen worked for a trupet dealer & that really put me off lol

It is a 5VY you have , looks nice and clean.
What do you mean by the seat mod and levelled out?
Also if you are only keeping for a year it may be wise to keep it standard, it will possibly make it worth more

The seat mod flattens the seat out so your junk isn't resting up against the tank so much, I suffer with that quite badly as I'm hung like a horse

any mods I do will be reversible - the bike's only got 6000 miles on the clock so will be keeping in top nick. I might just vinyl wrap the lower sections and the front part of the tank to line things up a bit more in regards to colour, not liking the silver on red, I think a black/carbon look would be better.

In all honesty I don't think the Street can be beaten for rapid commuting and general hooliganism, but it knackers you out very quickly and (in my opinion) is a chore to ride distances due to being naked, the wind blast is insane. It's also very flighty up front which can be fun when you're playing the traffic light hero but a bit disconcerting when you are picking up speed over uneven surfaces (i.e all UK roads haha). I don't miss it a bit which must mean something, I was hoping the sun might shine a bit today so I could get out on the Yammy but no luck, can't be arsed getting all soggy so leaving it tucked up for now.

Where'd you get that picture of me then?!

Went out for a blat on it earlier, soon as I got ten yards away from the garage it started raining. I always have the good intention of keeping a bike dry but it never happens, I'm particularly good at upkeep so it's fine..this'll see all weather conditions anyway. It's surreal how such a tiny adjustment in throttle will make the bike jump 40-50mph on the speedometer. Love it!

looks like your garage is an easy target for bike theft, only takes the wrong person to see you taking her out or putting her back and it will be gone .
Suggestion, get an internal alarm and fit ground anchors and make it as difficult as possible for them also a decent ground bar for the outside to stop them lifting the corner as they did with mine.

I've always believed that all the security in the world won't stop someone serious enough from nicking your bike though, and it's just metal...and insured...so I'm easy going about it (albeit with added security!)

i kinda had the same views until the new replacement 14b got stolen so 2 in under 6 months .. now if they want it boy oh boy they will have to work for it
