Hi all
Joined forum for help with a bike. Future son inlaw has a 1998 blue r1 in good nick and he loves it.
I have a St1050 but that is another story .Anyway the bike has a problem it only runs on cylinders 2&3 and we have tried to fix it without success so I thought that you guys are the best to ask. So once it's fixed I will get him to post some pictures. As some information we are based in Bedfordshire but know one knows where that is apart from when we say Luton airport !!!

Ohh dear a trumpet owner !
Only kidding Paul my Mrs used to be service manager for a trumpet dealer .
Check the coils & leads on the 4xv , the plug caps screw into the ends of the ht leads & sometimes they come loose , usually you can just screw them back or you may have to cut a bit of the end of the lead off , it's a common problem , also while your at it on the main loom there's a white 20pin ( it's the biggest connector block ) connector block that I think on a standard 4xv sits behind the right hand fairing or headlight ( mines not standard so someone else will have to confirm position ) make sure it's greased/oiled as they are a very common fault on the early R1's as they are prone to corrosion

Ohh yeah welcome in

Many thanks for the advice will have a look tomorrow morning and let you guys know . Forgot to say we had a lot if unburnt fuel in the exhaust with all the mucking around when it did run on 4 we had an almighty bang like a gun going off so powerful a sign 8 feet away fell off the wall !!!
We decided to wear ear defenders after that just in case ... :o

Make sure you don't stand behind the exhaust when you start her up

Welcome to the forum, and good luck with funding the problem. The bike doesn't have a power commander fitted by any chance, don't know if you can get them fir early r1's but I had a similar problem on my r6 a few years back and water had got into the power commander, disconnected it and she ran as normal.

Welcome in Paul ;) Get that future son in law to join up,we dont bite(well Bub sometimes chews folk ankles  )

No power commanders for early R1`s Steven ;) Dey got Carbs innit :D

Plugs 1 & 4 are both fed by one coil,so i would be concentrating on that and everything around it tbh,are you getting sparks from 1 & 4?
