Newbie from Southampton with R1 (first bike)

Hi all,
My name is Dimitry, im 24 from Southampton :) really in to cars but decided to get myself in to biking aswell :) have my full DAS booked for 30th of june but 2 days ago I purchased a 2002 R1 from a friend. Sadly the bike was crashed and I was planning to restore it- but seeing how much the insurance would be on that as I dont even have license yet I decided to break it (will post an add in the sale section once I find it) :) but the best way to learn how to work on a bike is to take the 'top of the range' appart i guess? :) I also have a BMW 540 and a Honda CBR 125cc (until i pass).

Are there any Yamahas that are fun, look sporty and are cheap to insure for the first year?

Welcome in, from the title I assumed that the R1 was you're first bike..... but its your third you dont have a licence and you plan to strip it    your best bet is to use a comparison site and put in some different models eg R6, cbr6, ect ect
might be a guy on here looking for an engine how many miles has that lump done?

well R1 is my first proper bike :)
before I had keeway hurricane 50cc x2, peugeot speedfighter 100cc, superbyke RSR 125.. and now CBR 125cc.... but all of those were childs play :)

I tried a few, but R6 is similar insurance to nijna and other sporty bikes... things I'm looking at now are sv650 (2004+), honda hornet?

engine has done 19k.... was perfectly fine until a car crashed in to it and damaged all the fairings and the harness on the left side... was going to repair it and ride it myself, but insurance .... ;/

ill get pics up in a minute

Was a nice looking bike !
I've got a girly mate with the cbr125 and after riding 2 strokes its ridiculously slow.... although a lot more reliable i'm sure
As I said jompy on here needs a engine , where are you based? I've posted a peach of a Hornet my brother has for sale ;)

That is a beautiful looking bike what a shame. Insurance is ridiculously expensive I think the models you are now looking at make more sense. Good luck with your test

Hi mate and welcome to the forum, if i was you i'd be keeping it and take you time to rebuild her, if you are in no rush then you can take your time getting cheap parts.

Im in southampton guys :)

The last pic is sad, but ey, beats pushing? and all the fairings were damaged anyway.... (was only 2 miles away from where i live :) )
it does look like a good bike, but on the other side its quite bad as all harness is ripped, needs all the fairings, headlight etc... so it would need atleast £600 investment, and it will always stay a cat C ;/
I change my cars monthly and being 24 I already had nearly all 'one day' sports cars (like 350z,s2k,rx8,200sx,wrx,sti,evo 7,m3 and so on and so on :) ) so i think I will be as bad with bikes.... so would be a shame if such a nice bike would sit in the garden for a year collecting dust when I can buy a mint one next year if I wanted to :)

Im just trying to sell these parts to good hands, sell my CBR and choose my new toy.....
so feel free to make me offers! :) (to buy parts of me, and to sell me your toy :) )

Welcome in mate. Take your time, fast bikes are a whole lot different to fast cars!

Thanks for a warm welcome by the way :)

think 800 is a fair price, knowing i could probably get 600 for the engine, 200 for the wheels and everything else would be just money on top :)

i fancy keeping it safe, thats why i think R1 wouldnt be a good idea aswell :), might start with something less beasty :D

but let me know if you want it guys, as if you want it I wont bother taking it apart.. and you can have it as it is on the pictures (without the tank etc)... must know by 7 today though... as when im finished with my 12h shift, i fancy getting my hands dirty on that :)

Dimitry, you have made a great impact to this forum already and made a great member one happy lad, well done   do stay you will have a laugh of two that's for sure ;)

Not sure what body size you are but if you want to experience biking as it used to be why don't you try a 90's 2 stroke 250, plenty fast, a great way to learn about 2 stroke engines and they ride like nothing else on the road. They aint cheap but will never loose money. If you can afford it look for NSR, TZR, RS or RGV. Have a look at the link below.

Just came back after looking at the bike again, read this and made myself sad...

all of my mates I was with said- keep it, break it, get some experience... I can have as long storage as I need and a hand etc..... had to take some time to think and decided to break it myself... and offered the engine to Jompy for £500 ...
really feel bad about myself now, but I'm starting breaking cars with my mate and heavily going in to bikes aswell so taking one apart (specially top of the range bike like R1) would give me more confidence once I buy my own bike and try to maintain it
hope no hard feelings

PJC- oh my god! loving those! especially Kawasaki Ninja 250 2009~ ... soo cheap aswell! so your saying there good fun? will last me the first year?

Dimitry , as peeps have said stick around, you are venturing into bikes, you are breaking your R1 peeps on here have a wealth of knowledge they would be willing to share with you not only mechanical knowledge but riding knowledge, and you are just starting your riding career.

As Jompy says this is the best forum EVER, like Jompy, I have Been a member of other forums, but they have not been like this, the community spirit we have is extremely strong and resilient, admin do a fantastic job of looking after everything. At the end of the day we are hear fir one and other, we come from all walks of life but share a passion fur bikes. I have made some good friends on here, some I have met, others I have got to know through the forum.

Much respect to you fir helping Jompy

Nope I didn't, I said a 90's 2 stroke was fun, that Ninja is a 250 4 stroke from 2009, not fast but corner ok and that is what you should be learning.

Bit disappointed to hear about your deal with Jompy, bad form young man :naughty: :naughty:
