Hi guys,

Just found and joined the forum.

I have an early 98 R1 4XV in white & red and a 99 R1 4XV in blue. Both bikes are completely standard except end cans, although I have originals.

I have a few other 70's,80's & 90's bike, but the R1's are awesome !

I have a few issues so hopefully someone can help solve my probs and keep me on the road.

How long you had the R1's ? what other bikes do you have ? right you'd best post your probs here or in the 4xv section so we can find some one with some brains to help you lol

I've had the blue R1 for a couple of years. Swore I would not have another sports bike after a big off a few years ago, and was building a collection of classic jap bikes. Always fancied one and took the plunge as they are now considered classics (lol !). I picked the white one up on Friday and am really pleased with it. I gave it a good once over and then got it mot'd and taxed and took it for a blast this afternoon. Runs really sweet, only problem I can see is the tacho drops to zero when I give it the beans maybe from 8000ish (any clues welcome).

The rest of my bikes are, 92 & 94 fireblades, a couple of rd350lc and rd250 LC's, two X7's, an X5, 81 CBX1000, 79 Z1300A1, 86 Slabbie GSXR750, 81 katana 750, 77 GS1000, 82 gpz750A2, 84 gpz900A1 and a few other bits and bobs...

Generally keep,things standard and ride them as much as possible. Will post pics along the way.

Wow thats a great collection you have there and i look forward to seeing the pics.

I will ask one of my mechanic mates about the prob and see what they say

Got this from my copy of the Yamaha workshop manual for this model

The YZF-R1 features a self-diagnosing system for the following circuits:
1. throttle position sensor
2. EXUP
3. fuel level indicator light
if any of these circuits are defective their respective condition codes will be displayed on the tachometer when the main switch is set to "ON" (irrespective of whether the engine is running or not)

1. throttle position sensor a) Disconnected b) Short-circuit c) Locked 0 - 3,000rpm
2. EXUP a) Improper connection b) Short-circuit c) Servomotor is locked 0 - 7,000rpm
3. Fuel level indicator light a) Improper connection 0 - 8,000rpm

It looks like you have a problem with the fuel indicator light connection

As hash says the rev counter is also the diagnostics indicator , download the manuals from the 4xv section & in the service manual the taco indication is explained very well , it's also worth checking the main wiring loom 21 pin white block connector & greasing it up as these give real problems as they get easily corroded .
