Greetings all,

Been snooping on the site for a while now, got an R1 which is in need of some work so I thought it time to introduce myself and say hi.

The story so far. After passing my DAS a yr or so ago I got myself a 2010 CBR 600rr. Now it was a very nice bike and perfect I suppose except for one thing, I did not gel with it. It felt a little too small and I suppose a little skittish. Anyhoo, I thought screw it, I dont use it much (Work Abroad) so I might as well sell it on and just bank the money, so I moved it on. Things is though watching it ride off into the grey Darlington horizon I knew I made a massive mistake. Went inside and it wasnt long until I was browsing Carb model R1's. Now this was the bike I wanted from the get go. But after listening to different people I decided to be sensible and get a 600 an learn my trade on that. Anyhoo, I thought screw it, been riding a little while now and realise it is me controlling the bikes speed and I should just man up and get the R1, So I did. Went and bought one from some ex copper in Hartlepool, Took it for a test ride and knew it was what i wanted all along  Should not always listen to the masses. I found it easier to ride than the CBR, the lower down power and bonus and just gel'd straight away. It was a little ropey looking, need a good clean and maybe the wheels powdercoating but I digress.

2 Days into ownership I needed to go to London for work and decided to take the bike. The bike was lovely! All the way down I was happy as a pig in sh!t and thought this is the one. Get to London, have the meeting and then the return leg. Bike was fine throughout the ride through the crappy London traffic, didnt miss a beat. Got it on the A1, and pushed on back home. Had some fun with some guy on the A1 M then stopped in Peterborough for some food, Food smashed, got back on the A1, decided to push on a bit, needed to get home, then a slight reduction in power was felt. Didnt think much of it. Cracked on again at a sensible speed and once I checked my blind spot to move into the outer lane i saw white smoke lightly billowing out the exhaust. sh!t I thougt. Slowed down pull into garage to see what was what. As soon as I stopped my face was filled with steam from the rad and the bike cut out. sh!t!!! Let the bike cool check the rad and see there is a hole in it, god only knows how long it was there for. Did not get any other warning from the bike itself excpet the smoke. So after phoning my insurance company for breakdown cover, to be told they havent swapped it on to my new bike yet, then my bank telling me my cover is for cars only. I have to join the AA and get reemed royally! Broke down at 1900hrs got home at 0245hrs 125 miles to my house. Fucking outrageous!!

Put the bike into local mechanic, tells me the engine is goosed and I should probably just get a 2nd hand on to keep costs down. I agree and a week later I am back at work abroad. Thought it would be easy to find an engine for a 5JJ, how wrong can a bloke be. Anyway after a long hard look around, the only decnet one I could find was an EBAY one that had been reconditioned and was to be a kit car engine.

This is the blurb on it if you happen to give a monkeys and have not hung yourself because this is turning into War and Peace.

THIS AUCTION IS FOR A YAMAHA YZF R1 5JJ 2001, (SILVER FRAME FOR THE CARB MODELS), RACE SPEC ENGINE.

THE ENGINE ITSELF IS A 5JJ BUT WOULD FIT STRAIGHT ON TO THE OLDER 4XV R1s ALSO

IT HAS BEEN BOUGHT TO USE IN A KIT CAR BUT I DONT THINK I NEED IT ANYMORE. THIS HAS BEEN KEPT AS MY SPARE ENGINE.

IT HAS NEVER RACED OR EVEN FIRED UP. ITS IN ALMOST IMMACULATE CONDITION.

THE ENGINE HAS BEEN REBUILD FROM SCRATCH: ITS SPECS ARE:

INITIALLY THE ENGINE HAD UNDER 10000 MILES DONE.

IT HAS AN UNDERCUT 2ND 5JJ GEAR AND SAME FOR 6TH WHEEL GEAR FOR MORE RELIABILITY

NEW CRANK SHELLS MEASURED WITH PLASTIGAUGE

NEW PISTON RINGS AND LIGHT HONING IN ALL BARRELS

BEALE TUNED GAS FLOWED / PORTED HEAD (INCLUDE 3 ANGLE VALVE SEATS CUT AND ALL VALVES LAPPED IN)

THE HEAD IS NOT SKIMMED FOR MORE RELIABILITY

YEC THINNER HEAD GASKET FOR MORE COMPRESSION AND DECREASED SQUISH.

APE MANUAL CAM CHAIN TENSIONER AND APE SLOTTED CAM SPROCKETS.

CAMS ARE 4XV STOCK BUT HAVE BEEN DIALED IN DIFFERENTLY USING THE SLOTTED CAM SPROCKETS

BALANCED CRANK (BUT NOT LIGHTENED)

YEC DIAPHRAGM CLUTCH SPRING 20% STIFFER THAN STOCK BUT NO CLUTCH PLATES!

ANY OTHER INSPECTION WELCOME.

TYPICAL FIGURES FOR SUCH AN ENGINE I HAVE BEEN TOLD WILL BE AROUND 155-160 BHP AT THE REAR WHEEL OF AN ACTUAL R1.

HOWEVER I ALSO BEEN TOLD THAT YOU WILL NEED AT MINIMUM AN FULL RACE AKRAPOVIC EXHAUST PIPE AND A DYNOJET CARB KIT FOR REJETING AND SOME TUNING TIME ON A DYNO. A YEC RACE IGNITION BOX WOULD BE ALSO BENEFICIAL.

A QB RAMAIR AIRBOX WILL ADD ON TOP 4-5 EXTRA BHP. ALSO PLEASE BARE IN MIND THAT AS THE ENGINE HAS NEVER BEEN STARTED YOU WOULD NEED TO RUN IT IN FOR A WHILE WITH A CHEAPISH OIL BEFORE YOU GO GRADUALLY TO FULL THROTTLE AND FULLY SYNTHETIC OIL.PLEASE ALSO NOTE: AT THE MOMENT IT HAS NO OIL OR OIL FILTER FITTED.

ENGINE NUMBERS PRESENT AND INTACT

So, looking at that, and how good the engine is i decided i must get the accompanying parts to compliment the engine. QB air box, velocity stacks, akrapovic titanium full exhaust and an alloy GPR radiator later, and now the bike is ready to be put together. First thing will be to fit the engine and rad, the other parts can wait until I have run the engine in and changed the oil to a decent one. Once run it. i will fit the exhaust, airbox, velocity stacks and Jet kit and get it dyno'd. Cannot wait. Unfotunately I am not doing the engine work myself, leaving that to someone who knows what they are doing, as I dont have the time to mess around, time in the UK is precious to me and I want to ride the bike. The airbox and stacks will get fitted when it is at the dyno too. Hoping it makes nice power and is a treat to ride. I know I could of got a fairly new R1 for the money I am sinking in to this, but it isnt my R1 and I couldnt let it go to the breakers and see another classic of the road.

Unfortunately I have no pictures of the bike so far, but will post more up and keep the project forum updated when I get sorted.

Plans for the old engine is to strip, see what the problem is and give it a refresh and rebuild. Might sell it or might keep it as spare, not sure. But that I will do myself with my pal and it will be another project thread if anyone is interested.

Really sorry to bore you all to tears, but my name is Sean and I am a R1 Owner!! :violin:

Welcome in Sean
Great first post & great read , shame theres no pic's but i'll forgive you that as the write up was such a pleasure to read .
I feel your pain as i'd jumped on my 4xv one afternoon to meet up with the forum guy's doing a track day at donington , the bike was running sweet ! i only made it a mile up the road . . . . . .
i was looking at that same engine on Ebay that you've bought (it's been on for quite a while now ) & although if it is to the spec that they say it's worth that & more i knowing my R1's power wanted some thing more standard so it kept the fuel economy & i know my standard engine has plenty of power for me .
i hope you will start a thread in the projects section as a number of us like to follow these rebuilds & i wish you the best of luck :)

Thanks Jompy. Bought the engine from some guy who had a couple to sell, think the other one went to a guy on this site that is in the middle of replacing his engine now. Will hit him up in the project site, see if that is the case.

Wont be able to start project thread until I get home in Oct, as got no pictures to go with it right now. But looking forward to it all and getting it running again.

well don't be a stranger between now & then ;)
shed loads of info on here that your going to find useful like downloadable service manuals / micro fiche's , links to different sites .
i use three sites for cross referencing parts .
partzilla for typing in the part number & checking part compatability http://www.partzilla.com/parts/detail/y ... 00-00.html
power sports of greenville for checking superceding parts http://brp.powersportsofgreenville.com/ ... 2210-10-00
And Wemoto for online prices http://www.wemoto.com/bikes/yamaha/yzf_1000_r1/98/

Also Borgs link-o-rama has helped in the past when i bought a kph clock set which you couldn't change to mph via the button
just hold your cursor over where it says "link section" & pick your selection from the menu that pops up , it's getting old now & alot of adds but still helpful .

was the engine advertised for £950 ?
