Looking at a new purchase soon, not sure what year R1 to go for, I'd love a big bang but funds won't stretch that far?

Been riding since i was 5, motox, trials, trails & hare and hound events..
Got a R1 5jj & an XR600R
I know it's all about taste, 07 or 08 ? is the extra heat from the under seat pipes that bad?

Why get rid of the 5jj it's a cracking bike ? Best bet would be to take a test ride on the other R1 models but first have a read up on them in the relevant sections .
XR600 ! Nice , do you green lane ? If you do you'll get on well with 2002r1jon from belper he has an XR400 , Alex_h also does a bit of green landing .
I've got a CRM250 but it s been in my garage for a number of years & needs money spending on it .
Give us a bit about your biking history & get some pics up of your bikes past & present .

Hi Steve and welcome to the forum. The under seat pipes are not really a problem, though I would advise on ditching the cat as that does get very hot and can be uncomfortable on hot days, great in the winter though .

As Jompy says have a good look around and test tie some before you buy.....

Welcome. I've just bought a 4xv, never had so much fun on a bike! Newer R1s would be better on a track but for street riding the carbed ones are a blast.

Bike wise the 4c8 is a great bike but as standard is a bit lacking in low end power, the throttle is restricted via the ecu in the first 3 gears. Heat from the cat is a proper right leg pain, underseat pipes are fine. To get the best out of it you need to ride her in the upper rev range. All of these built in Yam issues can be resolved and if you look or ask Bub, Damo666 or me to name a few we can help if needed. Should you ride in a restrained manor then just setting up the sussies correctly will be enough.

There are a few things to look out for
Crash damage, look hard for marks where the peg plate has snapped and touched the swing arm
Possible warped disks or seized buttons common issue
TPS issues
Not much else though.

Best advise buy a high spec bike, ride it like a 600 and enjoy

I do love the 5jj & I don't mind the violent head shaking as it keeps you on your toes!! but just feel it's a little dated. I'll take your advice and test ride a few models, I'm thinking a 2008 model or maybe stretch and get a big bang.
Yes I do green lane all over the Viking way, Breckon Beacons and Yorkshire although the XR has taken a back seat since getting the R1 in Match last year, it was a minter with 9k on the clock, it's already got 17k now and I've loved every mile too

As PJC said the 4C8 is an ace looking machine, i love mine, thought about selling it a few times but i just can't do it lol i got mine bog standard and the the first thing i done was to ditch the cat, the heat that comes off of those is shocking.

Hi mate and welcome, if you want a nice fast model and great handling bike, it has to be the 5VY SP then you get the best of both worlds and if you are a wheelie freak you won't run the white bearings dry because of oil startvation
Otherwise buy a cheap 5VY for £3500 and mod it to your liking..

Jompy.... the old CRM's are top enduro bikes, i used to ride years ago with the Leisure Trail UK boys before they got into KTM's through the TRF in Melton, you need to get her back up and running

Have a look in crash test dummies I have the odd entry, if you re-read my first post you will get to why Bub was a bit disappointed.

oh the 4c8 is a better bike than the SP once you spend a bit on sussy's. Its all to do with the 16v mota The US spec SP in KR colours looks real nice

IMO the 4C8 is a much better looking bike

Errrr I think you'll find he's pranged it more than once , in fact he's just ahead of scrapman in the crashing front ! Contrary to popular belief scrapman is not called scrapman because of his family ties to the scrap trade it's because he's very good at turning yamaha's finest into scrap in fact he's nearly as godders as PJC at it

Yep i love the CRM & remember feeling very comfortable green laning on it , I bought a CRM because of the reviews on it in TBM , I live about 10 miles from Okleys yard & leisure trail
