noob intro, r1 4c8 misfire issues?

hi

I'm new to the forum, living in the Portsmouth area but from South Wales.
Currently ride a yamaha r1 4c8, have owned it for 5 years and only racked up 18k miles
previous bikes being an aprilia rs 125, yamaha tzr250 3ma, honda translalp and kawasaki zx6r C1H

looking for some advice to aid diagnosis in a recent fault on the R1, (also guidance in navigating the forum would be handy :) )

the fault is causing the bike to misfire frequently but intermittently, from tickover through the rev range I'm assuming, as didn't rev beyond around the 6k mark on last attempt to ride :( :violin:
trail of thought has been, maybe new spark plugs, and possibly requirement to balance the throttle bodies? have just fitted a new motobatt battery in hope that it was the original on its last legs causing issues

any information, pointers to relevant threads greatly appreciated
i will try and improve my profile on the forum as we go along.

Many thanks
David

Welcome in David
theres comments in the 4c8 & 14b sections about problems with the irridium plugs so that may be a good place to start buddy & then it's just a case of eliminating possibilities as you go along , one new member with a 14b had missfire and the bike struggled to rev over 9000prm he found it was a pipe that had become disconnected from the airbox so go round & cheak all your breathers & wiring .
Where abouts in south wales were you from as we have a couple of members from down there like booster & i think welshmatt is from round there . my wifes from the porthcawl area.
nice intro btw

I had the same problem recently - two of the spark plug caps had popped up enough to cause a problem.

cheers guys, wasn't expecting such speedy replies :) will try new plugs first as i know these have done some miles, and check all breathers then go from there.
the bike is standard apart from motobatt battery changed yesterday, misfire only started last weekend after charging up an almost flat battery, but has had tickover issues since last year on cold days.

originally from the llantrisant/pontypridd area so have ridden porthcawl and brecon routes a few times so will always recommend a trip to sunny south wales

Welcome in david, it's nice to have some more Welsh people on here. Sorry I can't help with the misfiring as a goldfish has more technical knowledge than me, but I do know this is a good firum and peeps help one and other out and someone will be able to help.

So good luck and welcome.

Oh and we have a good sense of humour on here, well some of us do.

Cheers

Cilla aka Stephen

Thanks for the warm welcome and extra advice, have the plugs and coils out, looks to be corrosion at the tip of the spark plug and coil connection.
Hopefully this will be problem solved. Will update in the week

Welcome in David,

Sounds like you may have traced the issue. You wont regret fitting a Motobatt either, they do last a tad longer than the Yam one

Enjoy the forum and a fully functioning 4c8 ;)

Hi mate, Dave is a great name, I use it sometimes if I don't fancy using Pete as sometimes Pete gets on my nerves a bit(and others).
If ever you want any help, by all means pop by the workshop on a Saturday and will be more than happy to chip in, although you may be filmed and asked to sign a disclaimer. :D

seems all that was required is new plugs, resistance values of the coils were all about the same (not sure where to find manufacturers spec) and able to clean with some pipe cleaners :)
cheers pete/dave may actually take some time to read the small print when popping by the workshop then ;)
