Hi All,

Just got my first R1 (2012 with Akro's and all the other usual trick bits). Previously on a Gixxer 750, so loving the torque on this thing although Ive not really found decent roads/weather to really get to grips!

I think Tyres will be my next purchase. It's on used Dunlop Qualifiers and a little bit flat in the middle. Probably one of the most common forum questions, but anyone got any advice on the best tyres for these. No track days planned yet but will probably do one or two. In reality need a good fast road tyre, with sticky compound for those corners.

Appreciate any advice and anything else I should know as a new R1 owner

Get some pic's up & join in with the banter . theres a number of threads/arguments on tyres & it really is personal choice ! someones even stated they can get 10,000 miles out of a rear

Mark I'd say super corsas or racetechs.
If it's all weathers then I'd say the new metzelers or diablos

Hi Mark and welcome to the forum . Congratulations on your choice of R1 the Big Bang , or bangers or sausages as some on here call them are a fantastic bit of kit. Peeps either love them or hate them, I'm in the loving camp.

Tyres can be a very personal thing, what works for one person doesn't necessiarly work fir another. I love michelins, but some don't. I have used their pilot power 2ct's on my R6 and previous R1's but when I got the Big Bang engine, like you I wanted something that was stickier, so I use power cups , really sticky, but the downside is they don't last as well as the 2ct's .

Have a look at the tyre threads, join in the banter and get used to our humour, some people have said it's an acquired taste, but at the end of the day, we all get on well, well mostly, we help one and other and support each other , it's a really friendly forum and the guys have a hell of a lot of knowledge to boot.

Hello, welcome. I have Michelin pilot power 3's and feel absolutely fine, but as everyone says, it's a personal thing. Do you favour corner grip, braking stability, longevity, fast turn in? and so on.

In a recent PB magazine Pilot Powers were 6 seconds a lap slower (round Caldwell I believe) (with Rutter on board) than Rossi corsa's. 5 seconds a lap slower than M7rr's..

Just saying

my new bike came with michelin road 3's
i believe theyre more a sports touring tyre though,
good wet grip and long life,not something id have thought an r1 owner would fit but...
sempt good on the way home though,70mile ride back after fetching my beauty.
decent feedback and lots of confidence,more than i had on my old mille on metzler raceteks,
but i think thats more doin to the superb r1.
ive never rode ANY bike as fast or confidently as an r1,thats why i had to have another.
im to old for track day shennanigans so just just quick road riding.
ill have to see how they fare.theyve only done 200miles so theyll have to stay unless theyre garbage

When i can ride as fast on the road as Rutter can at caldwell then i'll start worrying about buying Rossi corsa's nice bit of info though .


jen was telling me when she was back at cambrian the japs were getting mardy because the sports & hyper sports tyres weren't selling very well in the uk as our roads were more suited to the sports touring tyres !
If your a racer you'll need the higher performance tyres if your joe blogs ( sorry joe ) the sports touring will do

Welcome bud and congrats on your new bike. Tyre wise I'm on team pirelli and using rosso 2's on the road, their slightly more biased towards road riding then corsa's and warm up quick but have a soft compound on the shoulders for when the mood changes. I prefer them to rosso corsa's on the road but I have no idea how they perform on track yet

Exactly. That's why I'm on M7's not Rossi Corsa's. The PB test is why I didn't even consider Michelins 'sports' tyres.
Confidence in your tyres is as we know all important. Having read how badly they (PB) rated the Michelins ruined any chance of me owning a pair - just like I've done to you lot by writing this...

Pretty sure I would have been very happy with them if I hadn't read it.

Just got some Dunlops Sportsmart 2 on mine, done a 150 miles and it is night and day between the old hard and squared tired tyres i had on.

Any modern tyre you go, for will prob be better than the ones you have on now, so be it Metzeler, Michelin or Pirelli. I m sure you will be happy.

all are a long way from the old dunlop d207/208's i had on my old r1 years ago lol.
realy didnt like those tyres at all,very weird feeling from the front and no confidence tipping in.
they more like fell in all of a sudden!

Definitely a funny thing cthat conference lark , I'll stick with the pilot powers but I wouldn't have power pures again . I take everything the bike mags print with a pinch of salt , they are heavily influenced by the freebies they get & having read some of they're reports on bikes that we're way off . When Jen worked at a yam dealer their mechanic was in his late 50's , he used to head out for a ride early Sunday mornings & people used to go out to try to keep up with him & very few got close , he rode with Concord remould tyres on his R1
