Hi all,

Im from Warminster ,wilts, between Salisbury and Bath, been riding for many years, and have many bikes mostly V-twins, but at the mo i have a 2001 Honda Blackbird, i got it to do some euro trips on but the other half has decided she no longer likes being on a bike lol, pluss new job gives me a comp van, so im changing for a w/end bike,,

Will hopefully be changing the bike next weekend for a 2001 R1, with fsh

Sadly i know very little about the R1 and never really took any interest in them, i have a pal that swears by then and says he would swap his 2003 zx10 in a heart beat for the 2001 R1!,,

Is there any real issues i need to worry about or are they as bullet proof as the Blackbird ? and with servicing, what mileage can i expect from the bike. i ask as this will be a long term bike for me..

You will not be disappointed ! The 5jj ( 2000-2001) are more or less the same bike as the 4xv (1998-1999) and share a fair few parts but not bodywork ! Things to look out for are it jumping out of second gear , if the bikes not been ragged it should be ok , check the exup valve & motor are working , if the exup hasn't been maintained they can seize also check the 20 pin main wiring loom connector behind the left hand side fairing has been greesed as these are prone to corrosion and can cause a multitude of electrical problems . The exup valve & white connector easy enough but the second gear problem can be a pain but fear not it's been covered in boosters post in the projects section , there's loads of info on the 5jj & 4xv including service manuals & parts micro fiches.

I think Jomps has covered all you need on the 5jj apart from the trouble with the front wheel.

Mine required no carb manipulating after having pipewerx gp3 pipe fitted

Welcome to the forum Jack, nice intro, as jompys has said, yiu won't be disappointed. I know you will be thinking can Yamaha keep up with Hondas build quality, wen having owned both Hondas and Yamaha's I would say Yamaha has the edge .

My 4xv ran standard jets with both the Leo vine & Mivv cans , it's when you loose the exup you usually have to set them up

im not one for having the front end in the air,, isnt there a way of changing the sprocket to reduce this ?? i only say this the Bird has more bhp but has longer wheel base and is a lot heavier .. so it never been a issue when cracking the throttle.

or is it something ill need to learn lol

It will wheelie on command, if you use the throttle responsibly it will behave just dandy so don't worrie

Seriously, it won't put its wheel in the air if you don't want it to, I must admit I was concerned about the same when I got my first R1 and I have never had any issues, but saying that, I was overtaken by a milk float last week....... And pods almost got past me a couple of times

When I first got the 4xv, I turned onto a main road through a give way sign. Thought I was in 2nd but it was 1st. That was an impressive wheelie.

Yeah if you nail it would n 1st or 2nd or give it a fist full at high revs you'll be seeing air under the front tyre !

I did one of them back in 2001 with my new r1.
By the end of the day was using all gears whilst hoisting a minger [emoji6].
