5pw owner near dundee

Hi, after being a lurker on here for a while i thought it was time to say hi.

After a history of crossers when i was younger, at the grand old age of 26 i bought my first road bike a vfr400, no pics of it just now as on my knackered hard drive.
A couple of years later in 2008, i had learnt enough on road to move up and was looking for an r6, when i stuck in a cheeky bid on an 5pw r1 and won it for less than 3 grand.
I dont take many pics, so here are some when i got it.

It came with a huge akrapovic can, flush smoked indicators, tail tidy, integrated rear indicators in rear led light, smoked screen, dzus quick release fastners and a sprint steering damper.

Here is a pic from a few years back on a trip to skye, which melted through my tyre, and i had o run on canvas back to north of inverness on a sunday to get a new tyre!

And a more recent pic from about 3 years ago

Since i have had it i have added the following:
Power commander III without a custom map yet...
Ohlins steering damper with harris bracket
K&N filter
Gp style bottom exit exhaust, and cut down the akrapovic a little too
Vented carbon front muduard
Carbon rear hugger
Chinese Stubby brake levers
Shark fin front discs, the rear was too thin and had some micro cracking so swapped for a wavy disc
Acumen gear indicator
Scotoiler
R1 yoke cover
R1 heel guards
R1 bar ends
Crash bungs on front and rear wheels and 2x bungs on frame
Rear peg delete for a clean rear end
Led rear indicators in light unit (much brighter)

I haven't really done any mods to it for a few years, just ridden it! If i keep off the forums, I won't end up like my cars and get lots of ideas!
Future plans are
Custom headlight, with xenon projectors and angel eyes
I have some braided hoses waiting to be fitted and a well needed fluid change. Any recommendations on fluid?

The first service i had i took it to the closert dealer, Duffus in Kircaldy, but it broke down on the way home, one of the few times, and they were pretty unhelpful at getting it going, thankfully a passing guy stopped, offered me tools, an allen key got me in under the seat and i found a loose connection, top tip is to keep an allen key for your seat in the rear if you dont carry tools!

Since then i have taken care of servicing myself, basically tyres when needed, brake pads, oil and filter every year. I really need to have a look through my haynes as to what else i need to do, brake fluid and coolant change coming soon though. If anyone has a rear brake line guide for sale let me know, mine has broken (i bolt onto the swingarm) Any suggestions for maintenacnce welcome!

Other bits i have done are a new chain and sprockets, regret not getting a gold chain but was part of an oem kit (my chain broke first run out after winter storage even with an oil. Changed battery and plugs as needed. the only bit that failed on me was the stator last year, just after my oil change which was a bugger! But was pretty easy to do with an impact wrench.

Joined the forum to have a look into some other mods and get some advice.
Things i need to read up on are the Airbox mod, what Velocity stacks do, and i guess these need a remap, so should do it all together.
Another thing is suspension settings, i have never touched them, and happy with the way it handles, I just dont know if i start messing whether i will screw up what I am comfortable with. It always feels better than my mates bikes, it is fully standard, but their bikes are usually pretty different so not a great comparison, maybe i can hopefully try an r1 on ohlins or similar. Also need to do some reading about th ais delete, not really sure what it does/pros/cons of it. Any other good mods please let me know.

My bike is no garage queen, but it is pretty clean apart from a couple of scratches on the rear from luggage and a slightly chipped rear seat cowl. i always plan to respray it every winter, just never do it! Just noticed this weekend on a run to lochearn that my chain guard has a crack, but spotted some nice black aluminium r1 marked ones on ebay from china, so will be my next mod as they are cheaper than used oem ones.

I do ride the bike pretty hard, i really love it, and there is not much else i would go for without spending thousands. It costs me about £150 to tax insure and mot it every year, along with some oil, and I have probably lost very little in depreciation, best bang for the buck ever! I want to get a track session booked at knockhill this year too, see how i get on. think that'll do for an introduction!

Welcome in mate. Cracking first post and nice spec on the bike. How does the exhaust sound? There was another member from Dundee but not saw him on for a while.

Yeah colin it can be pretty loud, but i love a few pops and burbles on overrun. For about £50 it was worth it, but off the bike just now as the chrome was pitted and i am refurbishing it in high temp black.

I only know of one other r1 round me, rare to see them local, gsxr central here!

Good intro, I loved my 5 PW an aw, I had the graves velocity stacks , a few bhp extra in the low to mid range on mine, I had it mapped by Chap at HMD Tuning in the Black Isle just past Inverness (recommended) , I had ohlins front and rear on mine , fookin best handling bike I ever owned.

Cheers Donny, Yeah thinking about the velocity stacks soon. Yeah the guy at HMD opened up on a sunday to change my tyre when i hobbled back from skye, met a girl biker who helped us out and phoned him, really nice guy, i will take a trip up there when it is time as I appreciate the service I got, and after chatting to him he certainly knew his stuff!

welcome bud, thats a handsome group of bikes,
r1 gixer,ducati,sp1 !
best colour for the 5pw,i had the blue and white one from new
but only because they were struggling to get the silver ones in and it meant waiting, which im useless at lol.

how do you find the gp pipe?
i bought one off ebay last week, should have been around £50-£60
offered him £35 and he accepted.
ive had it on and of and on and off my 5jj lol.
cant decide if i like the sound or not compared to my sp engineering can.

has yours got any baffles in it,mine hasnt and is basicaly just a tip lol
sounds basicaly like running the bike with nothing on.

Yeah i love the silver and black, so much happier with the black of the carbon mudguard and hugger, i think it makes it look way better, along with the clean tail when the gp pipe is on.

Yeah i always lusted after the 996, but was dissapointed when i rode it, sounded lovely, but was hard work! Likewise with the sp1, it was heavy on everything. The other guys have updated their bikes more than once, apart from me!
The ducati was swapped for a clean zx-10, then dropped, changed for a dorsoduro, then a s1000rr below, and now he is on a z1000.
The sp1 went for a aprilia shiver 750, and he is now on the tuono aprc below, it is quick but so different to ride to the r1.
The gsxr is still knocking about, he also has the ktm duke below, about my only other biking pic, from last year, in hillside, which must be bully 1969's neck of the woods.

Yeah i got the pipe about 3 or 4 years back, mine does come with a baffle, but i doubt it makes much difference, I did pack round the baffle with some wadding from my motocross days, but it didnt last. Mine is currently hanging in the garage in primer, waiting to be painted. It was good for me as i was stopped by the police who were sat out with their speed gun at the end of the farm road i live on. I turned in beside them, so they decided to stop what they were doing (i wasnt speeding) and check my bike over. It is loud, but i see that as a safety device alerting other motorists to my presence!

i think those dukes are more for eye porn than anything.
never live up to the looks/image.
i sold my rsv mille to get back on an r1,as it has always been my fave bike,
and none ive had since my original 98 bike back in 2001 has come close.

sp-1 was another bike ive long lusted after during my v twin spell but alot dont seem to rate them.
always held their money well though.
aprilia was a nightmare for me 2nd time around,
sooo many problems (what the aprilia owners forum call soul/character and reckon il4's are missing lol)
i call it unreliability and a pain in the ass.

i want my bike to start when i want it to,and not be buyiing batterys and sprag clutches every other week.
brilliant bikes when theyre woring well, and an ace engine, the rotax,
ive had 2,the 1st was fault free 03 plate,2nd one,02 plate was a complete mare.
you have to uprate the cca battery, uprate to the 150 selanoid and never have it off a trickle charger,
then the electrics ect.

my r1 is a 2000,never been on a charger since ive had it and never failed to fire up 1st time every time.
and no one can accuse an r1 of having no character or soul!!

Hey big un,
Yeah i have never ridden a ktm duke so can't comment, always liked the look of them too though. One day when i get off a sportsbike it is an option, always keen to try the s1000rr, i never got a shot on my mates before it went, but i have a couple of bmw cars so would fit in nicely! That or a newer r1 then something with a more relaxed riding position when i am older, tried the tuono, was on my list, or a duke, or the only other thing i like is a diavel as it is a bit out there for looks, no idea what they are like to ride.

Another mate has an rsv mille and a buell, but hardly uses them, not exactly garage queens either as they could do with a clean! My mate from the sp-1 had no issues with his shiver, but that was bought new. His tuono has never been an issue but it was only a year or two old when he got it, and is only 3 years old. the v-twin does sound good with the akrapovic cans though, way louder at idle than my inline 4 with the gp exhaust on. I didnt rate the sp-1 though, the fuelling was always off till he got a power commander.
When the sp-1 broke down about 4 or 5 years ago when we were out for a run, we were in a local town where my folks live. An older guy stopped in an original cavalier that had done about 40k miles. He offered to help and got his trailer with a front tyre holder on it and recovered it to my folks. He loved bikes, had a garage full of 20 or more elsewhere, and in his garage at his house he had an original fireblade, original r1, and a 916 sat totally mint all on trickle chargers! And a house full of bike bits/magazines! Bikers are always so decent!

Glad you are happy back on an r1 and away from the aprilias! I do stick mine on a trickle charger over winter, usually starts after a month of no useage, apart from a couple of times bumping it, so much more effort than a crosser! But yeah i love my bike and really dont think i will change any time soon, it is about the way i want it, never fails to make me happy!
