Just about to buy a 2004 R1, anyones on here ?

Post by The Rig »

Hi Guys,

im coming over to the dark side  as have been a gixer owner for 12 yrs but this bike came along and at £2950 seems the right time to be buying.

So, as a total newbie to the R1 thought id say hi and ask about this bike before i part with hard earnt money, here are some pics and a writeup of the bike and what ive been told , its in Blackburn bought by owner from preston superbikes a fee yrs back.

Matris rear shock , Matris front suspension, Gubellini steering damper, Double bubble screen, Single seat cowl, Tail tidy, Pazzo short levers brake and clutch, LED flush fitting indicators, Led rear brake light and indicators combined, Galfer front and rear contoured brake discs, Goodridge brake lines, Alloy engine crash bobbins front and rear, Alloy paddock stand bobbins, Gilles rear wheel / chain adjusters, Harris adjustable rear sets, Billet alloy bar ends, Alloy clutch arm cover / guard, Micron exhausts, Billet oil filler cap and a Power commander III

Also there have been a couple of handy modifications made such as the welded / reinforced swing arm which is commonly done and a headlamp with has been added so you can with the lights off instead of them being on all the time.

This will be perfect for somebody who enjoys all the toys and likes to have all the different ways to set the bike up to their preferences such as the suspension, the riding position with the rear sets of course the power commander to play with.

The bike has a slight stutter at 4k and im hoping this is due t power commander, can these be removed and the stock ecu then takes over, not familair with power commanders as my gixer was carbed

cheers for any input, good or bad, let me have it lol

A very big welcome from further north.

That's a lovely 5VY   , but no ones on here, except you of course. Well the Gixxer will handle quicker but the spec on that R1, wow well worth the price you paid and much more IMO, dont worry about mileage, its an R1 afterall. Well done Sir

Enjoy the bike and this piece of R1 heaven ;)

Cheers for the welcome guys, im a bit nervous buying the R1, parting with £3k all sorts go thru your head,is the engine good, box ok, does it suffer with dodgy 2nd / 3rd gears as these are the wheelie gears  , ive done an HPI and so far thats looking spot on, so all in so far im excited but nervous lol.

It has alot fo goodies on it compared to stock so hoping its not too good to be true.It doesnt have alot of service history so i might attempt the valve clearances myself, i did my gixxers (only checked them and they were all in so no need for shims under the buckets etc)

As for me, been riding since i was 17, 18 yrs now  when i was 17 got knocked off my Z250, gave it a couple yrs rest then bought the gixxer i still own today, started off an srad 600, but i converted the back end to the K4 1000 setup, upgraded the engine, loom, carbs, etc etc to the SRAD 750. i do all DIY mechanics myself on the gixxer as well as my impreza

Heres a pic of the bike and car

So, if the R1 turns out to be a good un, heres to happy looning

Welcome in Dean, beautiful looking 5VY you have there, I did over 65,000 trouble free miles on mine in just under three years. Also Yamaha's build quality is streets ahead of suzukis , sorry but its true.

Like pod says, check the plugs and possibly get the power commander remapped, they do that at the rocket centre at Blackburn, that's where I get mine mapped.

So welcome to the R1 and yamaha family..... There will be no looking back now. Oh and one last thing, you do need a sense of humour on here.

Jompy, or :animals-chimp: monkey face as he is known, only buys street fighter R1's, mind you his bike is nice, but yours looks better.

Anyway welcome

Stephen aka Cilla ....... The aka Cilla is the guys sense of humour again..... The thing is I don't think they are very funny.

The bike seams to have decent spec I'd be assuming the seller is a yank and or a penis due to the sh!te stickers, the painted in tyres!
But three grand is a great price!

Cheers guys, picking it up monday so fingers crossed all goes well, oh and im closer to 30 than 40 ! quite a few yrs left yet before i hit the 40  :violin: Ive had both toys since i was 24

Heres a techie question if you guys will know, just found out the ECU does its checks etc on ignition turn on and the Rev needle should go all the way to max and back again if all ok ? and if it stops at xxx RPm theres a fault that relates to this rpm ?

So, is there a list of fault codes/rpm readings ?

just in case i need them lol

cheers

Rig you can download the manuals from the 5vy section bud , if the link doesn't work try this place http://www.manualedereparatie.info/ any probs i have them downloaded & will Email them to you but it takes 3 emails lol
on the 4xv if theres a fault the needle will goto normal revs for aprox 2 sec's drop to 0 then go upto the fault rev's for 3 rec's & then repeat the cycle but i'm not sure about the 5vy
