Hi,

Newbie to the forum I live in Norfolk and I am thinking of buying a R1, the big bang variant, I've had most of the big sports bikes but never an R1..... So thought it's about time to give it a go :D

Welcome in Paul, I agree with Paul (clarky) Paul is a good name, it's my middle name :P my first name, according to colon is CILLA but he does have a strange sense of humour, decent bloke though.

So welcome to the mad house, our inmates are mostly polite and those that arnt have been muzzled. Some on he have a great sense of humour and there is loads of banter and General p!ss taking, but in reality, we are one big biking family and we help and support one and other.

Regarding the Big Bang R1's they are a fantastic bike, I'm on my third, but generally people either love em or loath them, even some diehard yamaha fanatics on here don't like them, so I guess they are a bit like marmite... Love it or hate it.

If you are going for a used banger or as they are sometimes known on here as a sausage.... Big Bang, banger, sausage.... That was PJC's foray into humour. my advice would be to test ride a few, in the early days some wee better than others, so pick a good one. If you are looking fir a younger bike then then a 2012 or onwards 14be with traction control and a redesigned nose cone is a really good version of the bangers. Whilst they will be down in the overall power stakes compared to a 4c8 they are like a v twin with the power hitting you from the off, oh and the sound of the engine is intoxicating. They are a big bike physically and do have to be muscled around on track, but they are so so rewarding to ride and don't half shift. They are good for commuting long distance and ride outs to boot andtheir size does help on the comfort side of things on a long run. They can be a bit of a pig though at slow speeds.

Anyway, good luck in the bike hunting and welcome to the forum, oh and enjoy and join in with the banter,

Cilla. :P

Hi Paul welcome to the forum mate. As Cilla has said a test ride is important. I have 2009 model and it took me a few months to gel with the bike with a few minor tweaks here and there to the bike and my riding style and now I love it. Once you learn the bike it is very rewarding and has plenty of grunt a nice amount of engine braking and a great noise especially with Akraprovics fitted! Looks wise I think the 14B is the most aggressive looking R1 with the facelift 14BE looking the best. Downsides are it isn't the easiest bike to work on and can be thirsty as expected. Riding around town can be a chore but once you hit the open road its a different animal. If you want something more top end try a 4C8. Keep us posted on how you get on. The forum is full of knowledge so any questions ask away mate.

Hi Paul and welcome to the forum.
What year banger are you after, they are a great toy but sadly lack in the suspension side and need to have upgrades by way of ohlins or the likes to get the best from them.
Happy hunting and i hope you find the one you want

Hi Guys and thank you for the warm welcome,

I've ridden a mates R1 and liked it, so have brought on off Ebay without a test ride, it's located in the Leicester area, will also get it transported over to nr sunny Great Yarmouth......maybe a bit mad, but have done it a couple of times previously without a hitch so hopefully this will be no different. It's a 2009 in White with the red frame and has only done 3000 (odd miles) from new.

Got a (in my opinion) good deal so thought why not......it has scorpion cans on too, anyone familiar with it, it's a 59 plate can't recall the rest of the plate.

I'm a bit addicted to white bikes, and even re sprayed by last bike (a B King) white too, only sold is as the wind blast was too much when riding with mates...great bike though !

anyway, looking forward to joining in and having a laugh with you guys and thanks again.

Nice bike mate same colour scheme as mine! Be prepared to have your sexuality questioned, apparently the colour blind on here think the RED frame is in fact pink? :naughty: :snooty:

I think the pink framed R1's or as colon calls them Red framed R1's will become collectors items as looking back in my humble opinion, they were the best of the 2009 colours. Oh and I'm not colour blind as colon suggests, it's just that I'm not as I touch with my famine side as he is
